I enjoyed this so much more as an adult than I did when I was required to read it in school. The author shows the love within a family including times of celebration, struggle, sorrow and redemption. Easily relatable when looking back on childhood dreams and then considering how our choices and life experiences influence how things develop and where we end up in the future.

This is my favorite book in the whole world and has been since the first time I read it in the third grade. Love this little edition with its beautiful cover.

My teenage daughter is into classic literature and asked for this book. It's such a It's designed book. We're so pleased with the quality as well. It's definitely a great story too.

I’m so happy I finally got the “excuse” to sit down and read/listen to such a classic! (It was for my “March” (ha, get it? 😉; not even planned, I swear) book club meeting; I finished it a BIT early 😏.) I’ve seen 3 movies versions (the 1994 version with Winona Ryder, the 2019 one with Emma Watson (NOT as Jo . . . 😕), & more recently, the “modern one” in 2018 with Lucas Grabeel (Ryan from HSM) as Laurie (of all people 😅)), & all 3 of them were good, though I still like the Winona Ryder one the best, I think . . . I also read an abridged version of it (with pictures) when I was younger, but never actually read “the original”, as they say. So, I was happy to have finally read/listened to it! 😊 And I will say that some parts of it, I did not like very much; hence, why I give it 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ in the end & not 5. BUT that may have just been me looking at it through a “2025 lens”, as they say . . . For example, when Meg is stuck dealing with the baby twins at home & “complains” that her husband seems distance, Marmee seems to put all the “blame” on Meg instead of “scolding” John for disappearing & not helping her with the babies! I was like, “Wait, what? I thought this was supposed to be a “feminist book”; why is Marmee not blaming John for “being distance”, too?”, but, again, that may just be me, my “problem” . . . Maybe I misinterpreted something . . . Also, the audio from audiobook was AWFUL 😣!! It sounded like it was from a recorded play where the “actors” didn’t have good mics or something . . . If I didn’t have the Kindle book to read along with, I probably wouldn’t have understood HALF of what was said! (That’s why I gave the “Performance” such a low rating compared to the “Story”.) Honestly, don’t know WHY it was SO bad, especially in this day & age! But, all in all, I’m glad to have read/listened to such a classic, finally! 😊👍🏻

Little Women is an absolutely masterpiece and everyone should read it at least once in their lifetime. And a novel that promotes gender equality and freedom of choice in 1868 is definitely a must read! The family dynamics, the sisters’ relationship, and the dialogues were all captivating and heartfelt. These little women were all amazing and reading their story was like a warm hug. Louisa May Alcott was a talented author and I can’t wait to read more of her work. And this edition is gorgeous!

I was surprised because it was thicker than a dictionary! The cover is cute, but there is no illustrations inside the book. Totally I like it.

(S. 519) Nachdem die Verfilmung von Greta Gerwig zu meinen Lieblingsfilmen aufstieg, stand für mich fest, dass die Vorlage zu diesem herzerwärmenden Film gelesen werden musste. Zwar benötigte es anfangs mehrere Kapitel, bis man sich vollends in der Geschichte fallenlassen konnte, doch dafür erlebt man zutiefst berührende, lebensnahe und nachdenkliche Szenen, die mich immer noch nicht loslassen. „Little Women“ hat mich hautnah mitfühlen lassen, wie schon lange keine Geschichte mehr. Das Cover: Ich besitze die englische Puffin in Bloom Ausgabe, auf welcher die vier March-Schwestern auf einem schwarzen Untergrund von grünen, floralen Elementen umrahmt werden. Der Illustrationsstil von Anna Bond ist sehr verspielt und niedlich, was mir in dieser Ausführung sehr gefällt. Die Handlung: Zu viel möchte ich hier nicht vorwegnehmen, die Geschichte kurz und knapp zusammenzufassen ist bei der Seitananzahl auch beinahe unmöglich, doch hauptsächlich begleiten wir die vier Schwestern Jo, Meg, Amy und Beth während des Amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs durch ihre Kindheit bis hin zum Erwachsenwerden. Die vier sind aufgeweckte und neugierige Mädchen, die Freundschaften fürs Leben schließen, gemeinsam Abenteuer erleben und doch mit der ein oder anderen Hürde konfrontiert werden. Begleitet vier starke und wundervolle Frauen auf dem Weg zum Erwachsenwerden und der Selbstfindung. Meine Meinung: Mein Kopfkino war durch Greta Gerwigs Verfilmung bereits etwas festgefahren – dafür war die schauspielerische Darbietung der Darsteller*innen einfach zu einprägend und lobenswert – doch das hat mich nicht weiter gestört. Schließlich gab es hier genug Szenen, die keinen Raum in der Verfilmung finden konnten und so spann ich mir mein Kopfkino weiter. Die Geschichte erzählt ausgesprochen ausführlich das Aufwachsen der Schwestern, gibt jeder Schwester den Platz, um zu scheinen und ihre Geschichte zu erzählen. Diese Erzählweise muss man mögen, doch in meinem Fall hätte ich mir keine Seite weniger gewünscht. Auch war ich über die modernen Ansätze überrascht. Die Geschichte wurde erstmals 1869 veröffentlicht und doch gab es unendlich viele Stellen, in welchen Louisa May Alcott ihren Charakteren gegenwärtige Züge verlieh. Jo, die nicht heiraten möchte und ihre Freiheit genießt oder z.B. Amy, die in ein anders Land aufbricht, um zu wachsen und eigene Erfahrungen zu sammeln. Zwar werden in diesem Buch noch die festgefahrenen Ansichten einer verheirateten „Hausfrau“ thematisiert, aber wo ich bei letzterer dachte, dass die Autorin Meg nach ihrer Hochzeit zu einer umfunktioniert, so zeigt sie auf, dass dieses Verhalten schlichtweg unmöglich ist und eine Familie nur zusammen funktioniert. Die Geschichte konnte mich überraschen und wirklich begeistern, was ebenfalls an Louisa May Alcotts wundervollen Schreibstil liegt. Die Charaktere: Ich bin ihnen verfallen. Jo ist meine Heldin! Stur und mit Willenskraft setzt sie sich über die stereotypischen Aufgaben einer Frau zu dieser Zeit durch und kämpft stattdessen für ihre Freiheit und verbiegt sich nicht, um der „hohen Gesellschaft“ zu gefallen. Doch auch Amy habe ich sehr ins Herz geschlossen. Das Küken der Familie, welches anfangs für die ein oder andere haareraufende Szene verantwortlich ist, jedoch dabei so menschlich handelt, dass man es ihr verzeihen muss. Ich kann mir gut vorstellen, dass manche Amy nicht mochten, gerade weil sie sich in ihrem trotzigen und unbedachten Verhalten wiedererkannten. Beth konnte mich im Vergleich zu den anderen Schwestern erst etwas später von sich überzeugen, doch ihre erwachsene und stets hilfsbereite und offene Art hat mir im späteren Verlauf sehr zugesagt. Auch Laurie darf nicht unerwähnt bleiben, wo er doch beinahe ein fester Bestandteil der Familie ist. Ihn mochte ich bereits im Film sehr – hier beinahe umso mehr. Auch Mr. Bhaer, Mr. Brooke und auch die Eltern sind nicht mehr für mich wegzudenken. Rundum gelungene Charaktere, die mit all ihren Ecken und Kanten aufblühen und gleichzeitig so herrlich menschlich sind. Fazit: Eine Geschichte, die ich zwar, verglichen mit anderen Büchern „langsam“ gelesen, jedoch jede Seite aufgesogen habe. Für mich auch eine absolute Empfehlung, wenn man mit Klassikern anfangen möchte. Von mir gibt es hier 5/5 Sternen und eine klare Leseempfehlung.
