I believe they are all follow the light. The third light on the top row allows for a longer trail of lights to follow.

Would this be to loud for a airplane flight?

It is too loud for an airplane. It would drive the other passengers crazy.

No sound out of box. 3 buttons at bottom don't do anything. Is there some trick to turn on the sound?

So sorry but I returned this item as couldn't get battery compartment open. As I recall I think it did have sound out of the box.
