How do I change the combination lock code?

This lock is dual- control structure and they are controlled by the same set of passwords. The initial combination is 0-0-0. To set your personal combination, follow these steps. You can choose to lock only one compartment or lock them all. 1.Put the dials at original number 0-0-0. 2.Lock the zippers in 3. Press down the reset button (a) with a tool until hear the "Click" sound. 4. Set your combination by turning the dials(b),for example 1-1-1. 5. Push the button(c) or button(d) towards to the direction of arrow and the reset button(a) will be back when you hear the "Click" sound. Now you have finished to set your personal combination.Please remember your personal combination by heart. You can repeat the above steps if you want to reset your password

Can you detach the top portion?

No, the top portion does not completely detach.

Do normal hanging files glides freely or does the zipper flap affect that? also, does the box above smoosh standard tabbed hanging files?

I would not say files glide freely. I have not lable with tabs. I wrote on the front of each file instead. I haven't found that anything gets smooshed yet.
