ROAR provides Women with all the training and nutrition advice they need to build a rock-solid fitness foundation. Using what she calls "getting fit to get fit," Dr. Stacy Sims presents a comprehensive plan for training the body to optimally adapt to exercise. The book helps readers determine and reach peak performance weight, build lean muscle, strengthen bone, and boost power and endurance. And because a woman's physiology changes over time, entire chapters are devoted to menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause. Review: Empowering and educational - must-read for women involved in endurance sports and anyone who coaches them - Loving this book - reassuring, empowering and very educational. There's a great balance of diligently-referenced theory with easy-to-implement practical advice and examples. The way it's written is friendly and informal but without any dumbing-down. You'll learn why apparently proven training or nutritional methods don't work for everyone and how to adapt how you exercise and eat week to week but also at different points in your life. Periodisation of training has led to great improvements in what people can get from their sport, but periodised training is normally arranged in sometimes arbitrary blocks of time. I suppose this book is about periodising your periodisation - getting body and training cycles to peak and trough together - excited to properly put it into practise! Review: This book is a revelation! - This book is a revelation!! As a woman and athlete I finally feel understood and I finally see the mistakes I have been doing all these years with my body and my training. I am so grateful I came across this book! In this book you'll find science and knowledge on human body, sport and nutrition and the differences between women and men. I totally recommend this book!

A great insight into female sports physiology
A really interesting book for any woman interested in having an active lifestyle. At times quite American-centric, but I learned a lot.

So good I purchased twice!
Excellent book. Lots of useful bits to carry forward in my cycle training. Purchased the kindle version and then paper - wanted to highlight sections for ease of reference. Having been over trained by a male coach - I know what that feels like. Women are not small men - do not train or eat like them. Buy it.

A must read for any woman who exercises!
Eye opening and life changing for me as a woman who has exercised all her life and now, in my 40s, find that I am putting on weight regardless of how much training I do. I made a few changes instantly and have lost a couple of pounds in the first week! It will take several rereads to garner every bit of useful information from the book, especially with regards to how to limit PMS!

Learn how to work with your body
Great book explaining how women can best work with their bodies for maximum fitness gains rather than battling against them. Book clearly identifies different training and nutritional needs at different ages of adulthood. On a downside, it's not as easy to see tables on Kindle version, but this is a regular layout issue with Kindle format. There aren't any tables so it's not a major issue, the positives far outweigh this issue. Highly recommend ROAR for any woman wanting to get the most out of their training and improve their performance.

A 'must' read for female athletes.
I had heard many positive things about Dr Sims' work on many podcasts and other forms of social media. I can honestly say this book should be essential reading for women of all ages who enjoy sports of all kinds. I have felt a noticeable improvement in my running performance since taking heed of Dr Sims' advice in Roar.

Contradictory advice
I found a lot of the advice contained within the book and Dr Simsโ social media pages contradictory. In one of the chapters, she advises to go low carb for my particular body type, yet she advises on social media that low carb doesnโt work for women and that we require a high carb diet. Iโve questioned her on this and Iโve noticed others asking similar questions about different claims, but she ignores these questions and only responds to complimentary comments. She has more recently started responding to these comments by saying the book is a few years old and that we should pay for her course instead. If the book is out of date, then surely she needs to stop promoting and selling it since the out of date advice could impact our health? Secondly, unless youโre an athlete, you wonโt find this book very useful as the advice tends to be very specific to high endurance athletes who require a lot of energy. I especially wouldnโt recommend this if youโre looking to lose weight. There is some good and interesting advice in there and itโs useful for any woman looking to understand her own body, which I wish was common knowledge. I very much appreciate her experience and I admire the fact that she has chosen to focus on womenโs research when it has been neglected due to women being considered an โanomalyโ. Overall, I find it difficult to recommend the book as I feel that the author isnโt confident in some of the claims, however it is an interesting read if youโre looking for some basic information. If you do buy the book, take everything with a pinch of salt, do some extra research, and do consider whether the advice is right for your goals and lifestyle.

Very insightful and helpful
This made me improve my trainings a lot, feel and recover better and make gains much faster. I am not a professional in any way shape or form, but it seems the advice she gives has a ton of impact, including on beginners like me. Even if you don't exercise or are not looking to improve your exercise routine, this book is a very interesting read on how our bodies are made and work, and how it translates on our everyday lives, I think the book is just worth reading because of that alone. 100% recommend

This is the best book I have ever read about female physiology!
This is the best book I have ever read about female physiology and how it couples with being an athlete. As soon as it arrived, I dug in and didn't stop. I feel like for the fist time I actually understand what is happening with my body during training, rest and the always fun, monthly cycle. It's easy to read, simple and not overdone with scientific jargon. It carefully and clearly takes apart allot of training and diet myths. My favorite parts were reading the stories of some top female competitors and how even just small tweaks can make a big difference. And not just with stories, but with scientific evidence and real life female athletes using that information for their own success. No two women are the same and what works best for each of us can be unique but this book captures all of that and then some. No matter where you are in your athletic pursuits, this is a killer book to have in your arsenal. Especially younger female athletes. Get the right information and establish good, health habits young. I am 38 so I am having to unlearn allot of bad habits, poor information and basically training like a small man. Worth every penny!

This is a book that every trainer, coach or health specialists should have in the library. Stacy Sims did an amazing job, putting together all the information regarding female physiology . It explains plain and clear which are the particularities, and how female body works, and what do to in order to work with your physiology and not against it. Since the book appeared, she has continued with the research. For an updated resource pair this book with the courses she offers on her website/blog.
