The funny side of the Schwartz
I laughed more at Spaceballs than Blazing Saddles, perhaps because I've seen more sci-fi than westerns, so I liked spotting the references to genre classics, like Alien, Planet of the Apes and of course Star Wars, as well as just enjoying the general satire. Unlike some parodies it has a fairly linear plot: Planet Spaceball is running out of air, so Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and President Skroob (Mel Brooks) plan to steal the planet Druidia's by holding their princess (Daphne Zuniga) to ransom for the code which protects their atmosphere. It's up to Captain Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his mawg (half-man, half-dog) Barf (John Candy) to rescue her in their RV-cum-spaceship. Moranis has the funniest moments as a Darth Vader-spoof who doesn't really need his helmet (he keeps sliding up the face hatch, I guess because you don't hire Rick Moranis then hide him in a helmet for the whole film); an angry Napoleon, he blunders about shouting orders and punishing troops with a fresh take on Vader's chokehold (predating Stewie's in Family Guy's parodies). He's so funny that he feels underused; I missed him when he wasn't on screen. Mel Brooks also does well, however, as Skroob, a role similar to his governor in Blazing Saddles, and Yogurt, a Yoda-spoof whose wisdom lies more with merchandise than spirituality. Joan Rivers, meanwhile, voices Dot Matrix, a female C-3PO, who belongs to Princess Vespa and fiercely guards her innocence ("VIRGIN ALARM"). Spaceballs isn't perfect. The humour, for instance, is sometimes childish in a bad way, using Carry On-style innuendo. There's also stretches when characters just stand around; they've run out of plot and jokes so we wait while they think up more. A tighter running time may have helped; 10 could be shaved from its 96 minutes (The Producers was a mere 88). But overall Spaceballs is a sweet, vulgar, anarchic comedy which sci-fi fans should enjoy on some level. A note on the DVD: My copy isn't really equipped for a widescreen TV, so the screen was bordered on all sides by some black space.

Funnier than expected
This film always looked so stupid, but it actually was silly and enjoyable. Apparently George Lucas is a fan.

Good, but not quite as funny as I remember it
This is a fairly funny film, but not one of Brooks best - for example, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein are easily superior. As usual with Mel Brooks the humour has a very wide range - there are subtle and high brow jokes, puerile and low brow jokes, puns, wordplay, pop culture references (by the truck load), metahumour, fourth wall breaks and even occasional moments of brilliance, but the end result is one that feels a bit forced, though a pretty good cast make up for a lot of shortcomings and Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet absolutely steals the show.
