Install the Degree Wheel on the crankshaft and set it to zero. 3. Turn the crank backwards until the degree wheel reads 8 degrees BTDC. 4. Align the distributor rotor with the cap location for the #1 spark plug wire. 5. Line up the magnetic pickup with the reluctor. 6. Just slightly rotate the distributor backwards from the normal direction of rotation. The contact points should be barely misaligned. Install the distributor and tighten it down. 7. The Initial Timing is now set for 8 degrees BTDC.

Which way does the arrow face on the clamp that gies to 1st plug wire?

I'm not 100% sure if the inductive pickup detachable lead is directional, but I would always clip the inductive pickup on the #1 plug wire, with the arrow pointing towards the spark plug. The direction of flow from the distributor or coil pack. It always worked for me, but like I said, I'm not sure if it's directional or not.
