Is this motion sensor activated?

NO!you have to adjust the back dial to how often you want it to go off.& the only way to figure that out is try each dot & listen for it to go off..1/2 hour/1 hour / etc.

Does this leave any residue on the floor? I'm concerned about pets getting residue on their paws

Didn't used to, but now all 6 of mine do....? Fresh batteries, moved to higher locations, switched back to AirWick brand spray (instead of cheapet others that also fit this "gadget")---and still leaving residue on floors.

could this be mounted to the wall?

Yes, I mount all of my units on walls by simply screwing in a screw at the desired location (Recommended +/- 6 feet from floor). Then I use the provided hole in the back to slip over the screw. Of course if someone lives in or visits your home which is tall than usual, you will want to hang it a bit higher so it won't hit them between the eyes as it does one of my visiting relatives.
