I've just purchased one of these, anyone else had the same issue when inserting adaptor into the monitor the monitor losses power completely?

That's what's happening to me however it's because I stupidly thought I could use this cable to go from a HDMI signal into a display port monitor - if that's what you're doing it won't work this ONLY goes from a display port source to a hdmi monitor.

Can i plug the hdmi from a nintendo switch into it, then attach the usb part to a computer / computer monitor?

Are you sure that your monitor has speakers? My monitor doesn't, but the PC still tries to redirect the sound to the display. The monitor must think it has speakers but doesn't. But the fact that the PC sees the dormant capability of the monitor must mean this lead must be working.
