How do you open the sharpener to empty it?

Sit Barry m side up facing you first , then, Put your finger nail to the left hand curved glass sides one end will open first then open second glass side at right hand side same way . Then you are able to open the larger glass side on bottom and will open empty . They should have but arrows on sharpener to explain hope it helps .

It will sharpen lip crayons, Its the best make up sharpener I've ever used!

Does this work on the barry m large eyeshadow pencil?

Yes asvit has two holes one either end small and large.

if it could be used in nars velvet lip pencil?

Unlikely. Look for a sharpener that has a chunky “lip” around the larger hole - this should be a pull-out plug that allows one more size larger, so it cuts three sizes of pencil instead of two. The Estée Lauder sharpener works on all Nars pencils because it has the plug, and it looks like the much-cheaper Tweezerman might too. If you look at photos of those, you’ll see what I mean about the adapter plug. Tip: put the pencil in the fridge for a couple of hours to get a better cut. Hope this helps.
