Just dip them, let excess run off back into can, hang and let dry.

Does this protect the colors underneath from fading in the sun? One guy says "no" but he seemed insane. Anyone else have any info?

yes it does protect the color underneath, but it can also distort the color. It will also let the color bleed through. We have discovered that it depends on the type of paint that is used under the Diamond.
