Can I sit this on a griddle to keep food warm?

I haven't tried that but I wouldn't think so. It's porcelain and the extreme heat from a griddle could do damage. I have used them in the microwave without a problem.

What is the size difference between 14 inches and 9.7 inches? Which one is recommended?

I would suggest the 14 inches platters! The 14 inches serving platter are much more versatile in the application for its size advantage, it's not only great for daily use but more suitable for parties, works for main food and appetizers. To be honest, the 9.7 inches platters are more suitable for side food and those who want portion control.

About How many Cupcakes can fit on one tray?

I would think 8 large cupcakes would fit without being crowded. We use ours as dinner plates rather than serving pieces, but definitely would work for either very well.
