Short version: This product works as described and has allowed me to salvage family relationships. Oh, and photos. Long version: I must confess that I once had a problem. Quite a lot of them, actually. Fifteen or more SD cards floating around the house, still filled with photos, because I could never find a USB cable to hook up my D40 to the computer. This actually speaks to an even bigger problem I have, which is my husband's tendency to magnetically attract all USB cords within a 500-foot radius, but since I love him, I have to overlook that. Because of my SD card archives, I made many family members deeply unhappy with me. Where, they wondered, were the lovely photos of this person's birthday or that person's graduation? You know, the ones they had seen on the camera itself during the ritualistic post-event review. I particularly hated this pass-the-camera replay time because it allowed them to remember just how many *other* previous events that still had not been entered into the online photographic family record. One day, I decided that I needed to stop buying new cards and actually start emptying them, so I went searching for an alternative to the camera's USB cord and discovered this product. It was inexpensive, which was a point in its favor over buying something like the Eye-Fi Pro X2 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Wireless Flash Memory Card EYE-FI-8PC . When it arrived, I had no problems using it on both Windows and Mac operating systems. The transfer speed was fast and I soon had many, many gigs of photos filling up my hard drive, ready to share with others. Recommended as a way to save your camera battery (no more leaving it on while you transfer photos) and, if you are anything like me, your familial connections. Just carry this in your camera bag or leave it in your USB port -- no more excuses for belated photos! Five stars due to ease of use, reliability and price.

Update, 13.Apr.2014: Rating still the same. Made some minor changes to my original review. I haven't really been able to find reviews for this reader that thoroughly address the issue of car connectivity [and I'll admit I gave a few a quick once-over and was just trying to key in on a few words]. I bought this item on a gamble because of that. I figured that for the price, if it wouldn't work with my car, I can always find another use for it, with barely a dent in my wallet. Allow me a tiny bit of backstory here: when I transitioned over from one mobile OS to another (from Android to WP8), I completely lost my USB audio streaming because my [then] car (a 2011 KIA Forte), only read audio from devices that allow USB Mass Storage upon device connect (Android does, WP8 doesn't, it uses Media Transfer Protocol (MTP), unreadable in every USB enabled car *I've* driven). It was was dangerous streaming music via my car's Bluetooth because that car only allows volume control via that method, I had to pick up my phone to change songs or reach over to the windshield mount and fumble with it that way. Totally unsafe, the focus should be on driving I ordered the IOGEAR SD/MicroSD/MMC Card Reader/Writer GFR204SD and got it in the mail about three days after ordering [impressive]. As some other reviewers have noted, it does feel a little flimsy, and care should be taken to insert and remove it AS STRAIGHT AS YOU CAN from whatever device you use it in, especially when it's a very tight fit into the USB port. I think it's pretty cool you can use standard SD and Micro SD in it, but I opted to use my 16GB Micro SDHC from my old phone because standard SD sticks WAY out (be sure to insert the Micro SD upside down). The Micro SD still sticks out from the side of the reader about 1/4", and I'm curious to know why they couldn't have designed the reader to accept Micro SD from the rear of it so you won't accidentally tug on it when inserting/removing the reader. The SD and Micro SD work perfectly fine in this reader, and the transfer speeds are very impressive; instant, actually. It would take my old Galaxy S II about two minutes to sync with my [then] car once starting it, with about 2-6GB of music on it at any given time. My reader syncs my 7.25 GB collection as soon as I turn the engine over. and the quick, efficient sync has been consistent with every subsequent car I've used it in. Tracks pick up right where they left off when you start the car up again. Overall, truly excellent functionality, but loses a star were it not for the delicate feel to it and the awkward design that has memory cards jutting out at oblique angles that make me afraid I'm going to damage it or the card[s]. I have bought another one since my original review because these things are so useful and handy. I definitely recommend.

These card readers have read everything I have thrown at them while holding up to many years of use. The first one I purchased back in 2017 just now failed and it was subjected to heavy, regular use. The compact size also makes these card readers ideal for your travel gear bag.

When the built-in SD reader in my MacBook Pro stopped working after less than two years, I was surprised to see how cheaply I could replace it with an external USB version. It was an easy choice for me to spend five minutes browsing online and then $7 to have this delivered to my door, rather than paying in time and annoyance to try to have the internal one repaired. This IOGEAR card reader is exactly what I needed. It works, and very easily. There are no complicated instructions; you just put the SD card in the reader and put the reader in the USB port. The speed seems comparable to my old internal one, though I didn't do any formal measurements. It's much faster than transferring photos via the camera, anyway, and I'd much rather carry around a small, solid USB device than an awkwardly-shaped camera cable. Basically, I'm very satisfied with this purchase. The one thing that remains to be seen is how long the reader lasts, but seeing that someone from IOGEAR customer service has taken the time to respond to some of the 1-star reviews on this page and offer help, I can't say I'm really worried. I'm just happy that I can transfer photos to my computer right now.

I bought this little SD card and Micro SD card reader for work a couple of years ago. It works so perfectly I just bought another one for home. I have microSD cards in my tablet, mini-laptop, phone etc. Very easy to pop the card out of the device and then plug it into USB of my main computer to sync files, copy music, photos, etc. quickly. Much easier and faster than any other way. I have had a couple of Sandisk microSD to USB converters before that worked for a while then stopped working after a while. Very frustrating. But this little IOgear feels solid, is easy to remember which way to put the microSD card in, and copies quick. I also like the little flashing light that lets you know it's connected. Besides being a quality piece of hardware, the price is great.

I had another SD card reader that I bought on ebay a couple years ago and the problem I had was it would mount but then would unmount on its own. At first I thought it was a problem with my MacBook OS (Lion) but decided to try buying this highly rated card reader and am very glad I did. This one just works great with no "self" unmounting issues. It stays connected until I eject it. Data transfers nice and smooth. Plus I am glad it is compatible with SDXC, though I don't have any SDXC cards to test with! My sole use for this is to transfer photos and videos taken with my digital camera so I don't have to plug in the usb cable to my camera and drain its battery. The only negative I have to say about it, and I'm really nitpicking, is that the reader comes with a clear cap for the usb connector but nothing to protect the SD and MicroSD slots, it seems kinda funny.
