Has anyone tried this with a 7th gen i5 or i7 Intel NUC? Would optane + a large hard disk be as fast as a smaller and more expensive ssd?

Honestly for the price, if you have a 7th+ gen intel CPU, and the space for expanding, this is a great upgrade. You should notice faster responses. The cost isn't much more for the 32GB variant compared to the 16, and the larger size may come in handy.

what does this do really i dont know much about this? i only have a 2tb HDD will this just make it boot faster? and i have a intel i5 7600.

When optane module is not in caching mode, can i use it as only disk in my system and boot an os from it?

Theoretically you should, but I wouldn’t if I were you. Intel’s cache driver is overcoming many of the issues associated with Optane and 3Dxpoint that wouldn’t happen otherwise.  In my opinion, Intel on purpose is marketing this product as cache and a companion cache software and not as standard NVMe SSD.
