Prima Facie (NHB Modern Plays)

Brilliant play excellent read, but if you can go see Jodie Comer's performance she is so good and her one woman performance is a masterclass in acting. An amazing piece of writing.

Excellent book. Well written. Couldn't stop reading.

(It did arrive in pristine condition; it's just battered as it's now well-loved.) Watched the recording of the play and really wanted to see how it was formatted, and I have a much greater appreciation for the text now I've read it, how to format a monologue like this. Some great monologues for some scousers in there, although any woman could do it well.

After seeing the play, I brought the script because it was just incredible. This is such a powerful, raw story and it’s spreading the word to so many victims which is comforting, but also gives hope to women, reminding them they are not alone in this world.

I saw the play as National Theatre Luce and found it astounding. I bought the bought for my daughter and my sister also read it after us. It’s excellent!

I think Jodie Comer is probably the best actress alive today, and it is a magnificent achievement for her to give this solo performance and to be on stage the whole time. I bought the script so that I could read it properly. And what a disappointment it is. If the author has practiced as a barrister then I can't believe it was in England or Wales. Maybe in Australia. The atmosphere of life at the bar, of the attitude of barristers towards each other and towards their trainees, doesn't ring true. But that's a relatively minor criticism. I don't understand why a lawyer would write such a crude, simplistic plot and offer it as an important dilemma to prove that the justice system is flawed. The message seems to be that if a woman makes an accusation of rape, she should be believed by juries irrespective of the contrary account given by the perpetrator. That somehow the jury should know what the truth is, as if they were able to watch the actual events as they happened. That the skills of defence barristers are somehow immoral, unfair, cruel. Which is obviously all nonsense. I have no doubt that some defendants are wrongly acquitted by gullible juries. The remedy is not to teach juries always to believe the complainant. And I don't accept the implication that a lawyer who specialises in defending the accused will have a Damascene conversion merely through being a victim of crime himself or herself. Lawyers, in general, are more intelligent than that. This is not a particularly intelligent play. It undermines and deprecates the excellent hard work done by the many hardworking underpaid lawyers in an under-resourced British criminal justice system.

Hab Killing Eve geschaut und die Jodie Comer war dort ebenfalls. Durch die Serie auf Netflix kam ich auf Prima Facie und obwohl mein Englisch grottenschlecht ist, konnte ich der Story dennoch folgen.. Glaube ich. 5 Sterne wegen Jodie
