No padding. but it is a thick bag so the computer will be fine

What are the differences in leather between the calf skin and cowhide leathers on the two black briefcases?

The black briefcase is made of full grain calfskin leather, which texture is soft, smooth, fine and with great flexibility. The brown leather briefcase is made of thick crazy horse leather processed of full grain cowhide/cattle hide or buffalo leather, which has a vintage retro and rough look at the first, and looks " newer" with gloss after use. Compared with calfskin leather, crazy horse leather feels stiff, but it features with its great durability.

YKK zippers? How to care the zippers?

I think they are ykk zippers, as there are "YKK" stamps on the side of the metal sliders. I usually use bee wax to care the zippers, which can make sliders move smoothly.

How's the shoulder strap?
