This soil is marketed as "loaded" with "TruBiotic soil microbes with both ecto and endo mycorrhizae" and therefore teaming with microbial and mycorrhizal LIFE so, no, it's not "sterile". But that's a good thing. As for gnats, no gnats included. But good soil attracts gnats.
