Exactly what we needed, worked great!
We planned on taking a trek down to Phoenix from Provo (and back) for Christmas with 7 people in the minivan. With luggage and winter gear, that doesn't leave much room in the van for everybody, much less presents! After looking around, I decided on this particular carrier (I actually saw it at Target.com under a different brand name and then searched for it on Amazon.com) due to it being the largest carrier I could find, being soft-sided, waterproof and reasonably priced (especially compared to some hard carriers). Before buying, though, I read the reviews here, especially in regards to it needing to be full. I was impressed the vendor took time to reply to a few comments and that the current version of the carrier resolves some of the older negative concerns (such as it not being waterproof before). Long story short, I was very pleased with it!: * It's absolutely huge - it held luggage for 7 people, a few pillows, blankets and even some kids sleeping bags. * "full up" - Because I had read about it needing to be full, I tried packing it as full as I could, but it's so big there were still a few empty spots in corners, between cases, etc... Generally speaking, though, it was as full as it could be for me to comfortably zip it up. We tied it down very tightly between the crossbars on my roof and pushed in the corners. We then drove from Provo to Las Vegas at 80MPH (there are several stretches in Utah where 80 is the legal limit, btw) in some pretty good wind. The case performed perfectly, didn't appreciably lower our gas mileage, didn't create any unbearable wind noise, stayed perfect stable (we did buy the mat to go underneath, but it wasn't really necessary) and was in perfect condition when we arrived in Vegas. After going down to Phoenix and finally back up to Provo (about 1400 miles, round trip), the case is still in great condition! * Weatherproof - we didn't get too much chance to put it to the test but the little rain we did get didn't get in the case All-in-all, we absolutely loved the case. It's easy to put up, holds a ton of luggage and was a great value. It was exactly what we needed for our trip! One note - if you do use the non-slip mat underneath, only use it under the back half (or so) of the carrier. We found once we hit certain speeds (especially since the speed limit is so high on I-15) that if any air got underneath the carrier at those speeds the mat would vibrate against the roof and would be incredibly loud.

Awesome Bag! Can't beat it!
I am not one to write reviews. However, I won't buy a product unless I like the reviews... lol Anyhow I only have great things to say about this product. My husband is deployed and before he left he moved all my stuff from cali to ga. I had family that needed my help during deployment, then I had to drive from ga to texas. I was nervous because I was going to have to do it by myself. So my husband order this for me instead of buying cross racks for our jeep cherokee. Now we have rails on our jeep. We bought a productive mat for the roof prior to putting this bag on top. Before putting it on top of my car I laid it out on the floor and put everything I wanted to in it so I knew what i could fit. Especially being I am a woman and once it gets put on top of my car I am not strong enough to take a 80 lb suitcase down. I was able to fit 2 80lb suitcases (laid flat) in it as well as a 50 lb suitcase (on its side) plus a couple other things stuffed between. The straps it came with are okay, but I am so happy my husband ordered some ratchet straps. My brother inlay showed me how to use them so that when I got to my destination in Texas I would know how to un strap it. It worked like a charm and I went through some crazy tornado type sever thunderstorms to wear I couldn't see 5 feet in front of me and had to use my hazards. I was worried about the bag and that it would leak, but nothing did. Everything was still dry, nothing moved around, and the bag still looked in perfection condition except for the bugs splattered all over it. The only thing I had to do was ratchet one of the straps a little tighter half way through after the crazy thunderstorm. I used 3 straps, the other 2 were fine and didn't get loose at all. This bag is amazing. Even after a 14 hour drive and crazy weather conditions it still looks brand new. Its a great quality bag and I highly recommend it.

Bad Design, Cheap Construction, Don't Buy This
I would not recommend this carrier. To go one step further, I would explicitly recommend you don't buy it. There are several reasons that bring me to this conclusion, which I will list below. Note that we packed this item back up and returned it... 1) The tie down straps that it comes with are useless. The tie downs are long 1" wide straps, with loops at each end. The practical use of such a strap is, well, there is none. I messed with it for 15 minutes before realizing this. Fortunately, I have straps with ratchet ends that I keep in my truck. Using these, we were able to secure the carrier to the luggage rack of our 2015 Honda Pilot. 2) The zipper is terrible. Not only does it function poorly, but ours broke on the first use. The zipper is supposed to be water/rain resistant. The practical reality of the design, however, is that it is very difficult to operate. The zipper has a weather shroud - little pieces of flexible plastic along both edges of the zipper used to keep water out of the zipper. This shroud makes pulling the zipper closed very difficult, especially since zippling it closed happens after you get the carrier loaded and on the roof. 3) The construction is terrible. To follow on point 2... We loaded this up to go on a ski trip. When I went to load it back up for the return trip, the zipper shroud had cracked all to pieces in the cold weather. (It was only in the 30's.) Along the entire length of the zipper, those pieces of plastic were all broken and cracked, which made closing the zipper an exercise in patience. It probably took me 15 minutes, going inch by inche around the entire length of the carrier. Then, as if to punctuate the shoddy construction - when I got to the last foot of zipper (again, packing on the way home) I found that the zipper itself had become separated from the carrier - the stitching had failed. I doubled up my straps (fortunately I brought extras) because we drove home with a foot-long hole where the zipper had torn from the carrier. Note: The tear was not due to my forcing the zipper. When I noticed this, I had not yet even "worked" on that part of the zipper to get it closed. 4) The design is flawed. A soft top carrier is a nice idea, but don't get it wet. It is weather resistant enough, but when the rooftop is wet - or as we experienced had ice on it - the soft top carrier slides all over the place. Again, this came down to tie downs. If we did not have our own set (and extra set) of ratcheting tie downs, we would have had to pile all our stuff up around and under the kids to get home. We even bought a "skid pad" for like an extra 15 bucks. It was just a 30" square piece of fabric. Well, it worked great as a non skid pad when the roof was warm and dry, but cold and wet it didn't do anything, and may have exacerbated the slipping of the carrier - again, thank goodness we had our own tie downs. 5) It is noisy. On our first trip the carrier was quiet until we got on the highway. At highway speeds, the straps vibrate and cause all kinds of noise. Keep in mind, we used our own tie downs and had the TIGHT. Even still, the straps vibrating was just awful on a 5 hour trip. We stopped on the side of the road twice to make sure it was still secure. Don't buy this. It is not only poorly constructed, but cheaply constructed. If you go on a trip with this loaded and it breaks as mine did, you may not be able to use it and find yourself with more stuff than you have cargo room for.

Amazing product
We have a Chevy traverse which doesn't have a luggage rack. I discovered this luggage carrier and how you could run the straps through the vehicle if no roof rack was available. This worked perfectly for us. Easy set up and take down. Of course added tons of room in the vehicle. I had to use a carabiner for each strap to hook the loops together inside the car which did not come with the carrier (no big deal). I ended up setting the carrier up the night before we left for vacation and of course it literally rained all night long so rain water ran down the straps and got onto the front seats and 1 car seat. This is why I gave it 4 stars but I'm sure you'll have that with any product you run through the doors. However, it did rain for a solid 4-5 hrs on our way south and no water got into the vehicle at all, only when sitting still for long periods of time. Otherwise, all of our stuff stayed bone dry and had no issues with flapping noises or rips/tears. I did make sure all corners were filled with rounded luggage and no sharp edges were poking the sides. Small towels worked well for padding if needed. Would definitely recommend this carrier.

Excellent product, works great
We purchased the Rightline Gear Sport 3 Car Top Carrier (18 cu ft) to haul equipment for a trip and it worked great. It held a LOT of stuff, without it we would have had to rent a trailer. It installs and removes easy, and I really like that it folds down into a small bag (I didn't want to store a hard roof rack). Zippers worked great (I added the provided lubricant), and can be padlocked, however I wouldn't leave stuff in it unattended for long because it's soft-sided. Using it for the first time I was concerned it would loosen or fall off, that never happened. I stopped a couple times before getting on the highway to tighten the straps, which was necessary as gear had settled and the sun warmed and expanded the material. We didn't get a drop of rain so I can't attest to its water durability, however the material is quite thick and looks to be fully waterproof. To protect the roof of our vehicle I placed a furniture pad under the carrier, that was really more for peace of mind versus necessity. It wasn't noisy, however we did hear wind resistance from one strap, but not loud. We drove over 600 miles with the carrier packed to full capacity- on highways, freeways, windy roads, bumpy roads, you name it, at speeds up to 80 mph- no issues. The carrier stayed securely in place and at points I forgot all about it. We recommend this product, it works great.

Great except zipper problems and and water dripping into car when using without roof rack
The waterproof coating on the zipper has started to crack and break on both corners after only the second use. We were always careful while zipping and stored it indoors. The breaks cause the zipper to get stuck when rounding the corner, which causes further breaking and cracking. It also allows water to penetrate in this area. Initially we were confused about how to install it without a roof rack. Without a roof rack, you install hooks directly into the car roof weather stripping, which did not seem sufficient to hold the entire carrier. We finally realized that the thin strip of rubber weather stripping is not load-bearing, but rather just to hold it in place while the door is open. The actual strength comes from closing the door onto the hooks, which holds them in place and the car top is very secure even at speed. We have a Toyota Prius. The car top itself is waterproof, however the straps cause openings in the car's weather protection, causing a LOT of water to drip into the car through all four locations. The water dripped directly on all passengers arms and after an hour drive in the rain I estimate about a quart of water came in through each strap location. Other than that, we found the carrier to be excellent. Very easy to install. Secure and safe even at highway speed. Waterproof even in extreme rain. Holds a huge amount of luggage.

Excellent, almost perfect, not quite perfect
We drove from Chicago to Sarasota, Florida, with this thing. Result? Excellent and almost perfect -- but not quite perfect. We loaded it up with 3 very large duffels filled with clothes (about 60lbs each), plus assorted camping gear -- total of about 220 lbs. We put a bedsheet under it to prevent scratches on the roof. Attached it under the weatherstripping to each of the four doors (we have no roof rack) and pulled the straps tight as we could. Put a small lock on the zippers for extra security. Loading it up was really challenging. I attached it to the roof, then used a stepstool to get the duffels in. Definitely did not want to unload until arrival in Sarasota. Upon arrival, everything was totally dry. And the first 10 hours of the drive was in nonstop rain! The waterproofing is for real. The bag was stable. We never felt it was going to slip off or that we had to drive excessively slowly on turns or anything like that. The vehicle (we have an SUV) handled normally. Initially the straps buzzed in the wind but with tightening and adjustments, we got the buzzing to go away. Still a lot of wind noise on the drive. I don't think there's any help for that. No scratching on the roof. However, there are slight abrasions on the paint where the straps ran along the frame of the car above the doors. They're barely visible but I think the paint has been affected. To me, they're not a big deal but if I cared about my car being pristine it would bother me. I'm glad I got it and would choose it again over any competitors.

Not bad in a pinch, but beware of problems. It depends on your situation.
As an overall carrier, it's not bad if you really need the space or if you're going short distances. But for a road trip I wouldn't recommend it. It might work better in cars other than ours, but I can't say. Note: We did buy and use the pad that goes underneath. Pros: - Lots of space. We were able to get 10 or more garbage bags full of clothes, and then some other things like small bags of kids toys, and books. It all fit comfortably. - We drove it through the rain for hours and everything inside stayed completely dry. - Fairly easy to install. Cons: - Wind noise at higher speeds was annoying (50+ MPH), enough that it was considerably harder to talk and listen to music. Normally, our car is pretty quiet. - With any wind at all, or at higher speeds without wind (50+ MPH), the car was harder to keep straight. It wasn't bad or dangerous, just annoying and a bit exhausting. - When it rained, rain dripped into the car where the seals were pulled up by the straps. I suspect if we would have continued using the carrier, it would have damaged the seals permanently. - Our car, a 2015 Kia Optima, has chrome trim up around where the straps for the carrier went. The straps went over the trim. After a few days of using the carrier, one of the chrome pieces broke off toward one end.

It works!
I purchased this carrier, along with the non-skid roof pad and car clips to enhance the storage space of our 2010 Elantra Touring (which doesn't have any roof rails) for an upcoming summer camping trip. I was initially a little concerned that it might be too large after checking the manufacturers recommendations, however the measurements were right, so I took the plunge. As you can see from the photos, it fit perfectly. The car's manual states that the roof will support 80kg (176lbs), so loading capacity doesn't seem to be an issue with a carrier this large. As we plan on travelling this summer, I decided to test the carrier out with our gear to see how it would fare. I read all the reviews, watched all of the manufacturers videos, and read all the FAQs to ensure I was aware of all the recommended and proper loading and hauling procedures. Then I proceeded to load it up with two cots, a folding camp table, an 8-man tent, two following chairs, two pillows, a queen sized comforter, and a 106L Rubbermaid container. The carrier easily held all of this gear, with a bit of space remaining for various small items (next time I pack it, I expect to add our queen air mattress and two burner camp stove). I then strapped everything in, and went for a drive, heading out on some hilly and twisty back roads, averaging 50km/h. I made a stop about 5km in to get out and check the bag -- it hadn't budged. The straps were still perfectly tight. I checked it again after about 15km, and the story was the same. As I had tied up all of the excess strap, and ensured the bag was pretty well filled, there was no noise. It performed admirably. For our next trial, I plan on ditching the 106L Rubbermaid container, and replacing it with a canvas duffle of some sort instead. The container is a bit too tall to really get the velcro down at the back, and the zipper was a bit tight. But that's hardly the fault of the carrier bag itself (and it was to learn these things that I ran a pack-test before our first camping trip of the season!). Overall, a great solution to our extra storage needs when camping; I'm already looking forward to taking it on all this summers adventures!

This thing is waterproof for sure but it's NOT sturdy.
I bought this for a 4 hour drive camping trip. This thing is definitely water proof. I only loaded sleep pads, sleeping bags, clothes, pillows, basically all soft items in it cause I didn't want to scratch the roof. Halfway there, the strap holding the d-ring snapped and the carrier started dragging. I pulled over and found half my gear ripped and one more d-ring tag was getting torn. This thing is waterproof for sure but it's NOT sturdy.
