John Singer Sargent

Love Sargent’s book!

I was pleased with the substantial biographical text along with the quantity of color plates (171) & black & white drawings (85 charcoal). I purchased this book just to get a full page plate of the Lady Agnew portrait, to use as reference for a copy-drawing that I was working on. I decided to purchase this compilation of JSS's work, since it was a collaboration with JSS's great nephew Richard Ormond, Art expert and director of Greenwich Maritime Museum, combined with Elaine Kilmurray's expertise in Art collection catalogue work. This book gave me much more. My admiration of JSS's portraiture expanded after seeing the John Singer Sergeant exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum in Seattle. Especially awe-inspiring was the (at least 7 foot tall) original of "Madame X". This book is a good followup to seeing real Sargeant's paintings. Wish the Sargeant's exhibit would come back to Seattle. I have new questions since purchasing & reading this book.

Beautiful pictures and interesting information but it did not have enough of the biographical info I was looking for. I would like to know of a really good biography of Sargent and his sister (in case you know of one when you read this).

Large hardcover book with big beautiful pictures. The color on the photos are crisp and accurate.

Received my used copy of this over-sized art book today and I haven't been able to put it down! Beautiful reproductions and interesting copy. I wish I had the $$ to buy a hardcover because I know I'll wear the binding out on this paperback by referring to it constantly(I'm a painter), but for $15 this was a great value!

Love the pictures and biographical information. Disappointed in this used copy because of in large water damage in the binding on back cover in 2 places. It was listed as “very good” condition and this was not accurate.

Read this in preparation for another Sargent exhibit. Terrific book if you are interested in him and his art.

Tremendous portraiture - cannot stop looking at the magnificent plates.

No estoy muy contento con la calidad de las imágenes, algunas con tonos muy amarillos e incluso en algunas partes desenfocadas, no sé si fue cuestión de imprenta, algunas tienen buena calidad y son nítidas otras tienen los negros grisáceos. Busquen otro libro mejor.

Le livre arrivé n'était pas celui commandé, (c'était bien le bon peintre, mais pas l'auteur ni l'édition prévue) et la couverture était en mauvais état ce qui n'était pas précisé dans l'annonce. Très décevant

Well laid out and a good balance of text and images. Content beautiful, of course.
