How is this different from a “peanut” roller?

The big difference is that the Backpod will do a really good stretch on tight rib joints and a "peanut" or foam roller can't.   Peanuts and foam rollers are fine for giving a backwards stretch to a hunched spine.  But the rib cage joints are part of a hunched, tightened back, and you need something that'll sit under the rib to stretch it.  (This is essential for costochondritis and some other rib problems, like asthma.)  The small stable peaked shape of the Backpod does that.   Also, all rollers and balls are unstable, so your muscles can;t relax on them, which means you don't get as good a stretch on the joints.  Cheers, Steve August.

Can you use this in bed?

Hi Mary Ann, I have reached out to the manufacturer and they have given the following response to your question:Not really - a bed is too springy so the Backpod can not do such a good stretch on a tight thoracic spine.  You get a better stretch just lying on the Backpod on a carpeted floor, with a pillow or two under your head for more comfort if needed. Hope this helps?Best regards,Scott

Is this a massager? Is it an alarm to make you use good posture? Still not sure how you use it.

It's not a massager, it's not an alarm.  
You just lay your upper back on it, it will the tension on your chest.
It helps.  But doesn't cure. You need to do it at least 10 minutes  daily.

Does this help low back pain?

I'm the New Zealand physio who invented the Backpod.  It won't help low backs directly, but freeing up the upper and middle back with it takes a surprising amount of load off the low back.

Low backs are complicated.  Some are disc, some are spinal joints locking, some are sacroiliacs, some are the muscles, and some a combination.  So you can't build a single device that will help all low back problems - in spite of the advertising hype!

Upper and middle backs are much easier.  Lots come from too much hunching, even if there's also been a whiplash or other impact or strain.  So you can build a single device that will help almost all of them.  That's what we've done with the Backpod, out of 30 years of expertise in treating spines in New Zealand.  We do genuinely think it's the most effective device for stretching free tight, hunched thoracic spines, and the only one which will do an effective stretch on the tight rib joints that are part of any tight upper or middle back problem.

The Backpod does have a specific use in freeing up tight sacroiliac joints, but it's not otherwise a low back treatment device.  However freeing up the upper and middle back and rib cage takes a lot of load off a low back problem.
