Edifier R980T 4" Active Bookshelf Speakers - 2.0 Computer Speaker - Powered Studio Monitor (Pair)

I bought my first turntable last week and everyone kept saying to find Edifiers. I kept striking out on Marketplace and eBay, so I hopped over here and noticed how expensive the higher end speakers were. On a whim, chose these and hoped for the best. They look higher quality IRL than in pictures, with a black grainy wood. I hardly have the volume up and you’d almost think I had subwoofers. The bass, stacked vocal lines, and other instruments shine through. If you’re in an apartment, be careful! But if you have a house, you could easily mimic the bodily feeling of a small concert if you blasted these speakers. I was giddy as hell playing my very first vinyl through these speakers and had a dance party alone, lol. Noting that the instructions state to go to the Edifier website, but there are no videos on set-up. The instructions up to a certain point helps, but I needed to go to YouTube to figure out how to connect the passive speaker to the active and turntable. Also had to upgrade to a larger storage set-up the next day, lol. These are the right size for an apartment or small house. Since I’m a newbie, these will be perfect for a while, but if I keep up with the hobby long-term, I’ll upgrade to a higher end Edifier. 10/10 worth it.

I think this speaker is amazing for the price! Very easy set up & quality is exceptional! It has a bass tuning control knob. Volume control knob! Size is compact! I used this speaker with a record player that was awesome. Sound quality pristine! Really awesome truly! My gf was so happy & satisfied but then again she came from a victoriola set! My only complaint is the shipping but so much the fault of the company or seller. More so amazon-

I really like these speakers. The reason I chose these was for several reasons: 1. Affordability - These were under $100 and had plenty of good reviews. 2. Versatile - I bought these for my Audio Technica 120 turntable. I like that they have the input holes vs other speakers that only have cables going out. This eliminated the need for an adapter between the speakers and the turntable. I may buy some for my computer in the future. 3. Looks - These look very sleek and have a faux wood look. Unfortunately, the black doesn't fit my aesthetic, so I'm going to end up covering these with a fun patterned or solid colored vinyl. At first, it seemed complicated to set these up because of the red and black cables, but all you do is stick them in their corresponding holes. Very simple to understand. It also comes with 2 sets of cables for the inputs. The sound quality is pretty decent for me. You can adjust the bass with the knob next to the volume knob. I wouldn't say these are the clearest sounding speakers but for the price, they are definitely unbeatable.

*Note: The terminals will take up to about 14ga wire. Not that it is needed for this low power near field set up. Just an FYI. And the cable that comes with is only about 18ga. So, these things are hard to nail down there is a lot of good and bad which for 60 bucks you have to keep in mind that real studio monitors or hifi speakers cost 6 times this much for the entry level usually. Also my review comes from a stand point of using them for computer desk speakers at work vs two other pre built 2.1 systems I have had in the past. If you are considering going this route and then maybe adding a powered sub vs a logitech or similar 2.1 system let me just say that if you aren't super concerned with a flatter presentation and medium better sound clarity, skip the hassle and get the Logitech Z625 instead. It is louder by itself, THX certified and comes with a sub so at 100 bucks you will save some money gain some volume and not have the headache. BUT... if you like clean music more than volume and bass these are an ok starting out point for a pair of powered speakers. Normally I would never buy the lowest end set of monitors a company offers but I needed some new sound for my work desk and I can't really listen to music at a billion decibels anyway so I went ahead and picked these up. I would compare them out of the box to a Logitech z333 system as far as bass level, volume and presentation of sound. They aren't much louder at 12w per side than the logitechs that are only 5 or 6w per side. The difference being though is these are powering a woofer and tweeter in both cabinets vs just one smaller all purpose woofer like logitech satellites. So they are sharing the power and that kind of makes sense. HOWEVER, unlike the logitech garbage, you get the entire range of volume with these. The logitech sets claim all this power etc in ads but when it comes to cranking it up to 11 you are going to get some significant distortion out of any logitech set. These are the opposite. You can crank these to 11 and run them all day and you wont get any distortion assuming there is no problems with your signal etc. AND the sound is much cleaner and much flatter of an EQ than logitech stuff. Now that doesn't mean these things are true monitors and really a flat EQ because they aren't. You can tell they have still been front loaded a little bit to make a subtle swoop into the range but... much flatter than other multimedia speakers made for computers under 100 bucks. Right now the better set of Edifier speakers is also under 100 bucks and if I wasn't trying to spend as little as possible I would have picked up the R1280T instead that is a no brainier those things are phenomenal speakers for their price point. The other positive about these speakers is, their amps are really under powered for what the cones can actually do. Some people would view this as a bad thing or like they are cutting corners or something but no, its them making sure you can crank your volume all the way up without getting distortion and making sure their product sounds good. A lot of companies do it. With that in mind if you have a tube preamp or DAC that you can feed into these things holy moly do they explode with volume. With a cheap pre amp these things go from bout the same level volume as a logitech z333 system to something i would expect to run at 40 or 50 watts rms just for the satellites. You can get some serious sound out of these speakers with the right add ons. Thats why for most people, they can get more bang for their buck out of a pre built 2.1 system but if you are like me and you dabble in audio, maybe you have a dac or pre amp or mixer or things like that laying around that you could experiment with these they can sound really good FOR THEIR PRICE. Never forget these things are 59 dollars right now. And just plan on adding a small sub. They are ok on low end but to get them there you have to put the bass up over neutral and I don't like that. Monoprice has a 8 in 60w powered sub for only 60 bucks right now. Well worth it to add to these and make a legit entry level 2.1 system.

I've got these connected to a WiiM Mini, in my kitchen as part of a whole-house audio system. For their size, they deliver warm and punchy audio. Definitely impressed for the price and size. No issues with audio or connection. Easy to connect to the WiiM without any issues.. They aren't so small they're not noticeable, but they fit nicely on some corner countertop and their dark and sleek appearance lets them blend in well.

Had this speaker for 6 years on my pc and it's worked great since then. Surprisingly good quality sound for the price for cheap speaker that can probably last you a decade.

I mean I don’t want to annoy my wife; as I think I also spent $80 on our first date, but this is a close toss-up. I’ve had these speakers awhile now, probably 18 months. I was just turning 50 and I said, “time for some me-time.” I could have purchased a new Trans Am like my idiot coworker…God, what a nut case. I settled in for a new gamming PC setup with Case, CPU, GPU, Monitor, standing desk, shelves, and cabinets. You know…the Trans Am is starting to look like the better purchase. Anyhow, I never thought about computer speakers until after I got everything setup some months later. I had a set of PC speakers that came free with a previous system that were about 4” tall. They did their job for a while, but everything on the new desk was new except for the speakers. It was time for an upgrade. So, I spent a couple of weeks looking at different solutions and budgets. Soundbar? 5.1? Bookshelf? I decided to go with active powered monitors. There might be 1000 different brands and models to sort though. Search for active powered speakers or near filed monitors and call me back in three months and I will release you from your curse. After a while I just gave up and said, “maybe the R980T is all I need.” It’s a small office. Our son sleeps on the other side of the wall. But no man! I’m fifty…I deserve the Klipsch’s The Fives for $500, right. Holy snot AF. These R980Ts are straight up amazing. I’m in a 10x10 office. None of my other sound systems in the living room or master bedroom are as enjoyable as these $80 wonders. Yes, they are positioned three feet away from me. And now they are sitting on some HumanCentric Desktop Speaker Stands Wedges for another $25 that make these even more immersive. Gamming and watching YouTube or any streaming service sounds better than any of my other solutions. And, just like the PC, I spent a lot of money in the other rooms. I’m not going to tell you that you can’t spend more for desktop speakers. I’ve never listened to The Fives. But after my wife, who works a very long hours and makes a lot of money, started looking in the office and questioning just where in fact all this stuff came from, well, it was time to go cheap. And I don’t regret it a bit. I can’t imagine anyone having a sonic need to spend more money on a speaker they’re gong to place on their desk. Maybe the $150 Edifiers are even more amazing. Maybe. Good luck getting that past the wife.

Paired them with my Audio Technica turntable and they have an amazing sound for smaller side speakers. They look great! Adjustable bass and volume for when you want those specific records to pack a punch. I’d say they’re best suited for a small-medium home if you want the sound to carry. If you’re trying to drown out all other sounds, these speakers are not for you.

I just hooked these R980T's up and played Benassi - Love is Gonna Save Us which I find to my ears a good test for bass and overall responsiveness and these speakers (for the money) are a fantastic value. I bought these as a replacement for a pair of Creative Gigaworks T20's (the left speaker was DOA). What are the points of the comparison between those two speakers? Well, they worked right out of the box, so that's one for the Edifiers. They are substantially heavier and made with real wood versus plastic for the T20's. They are substantially wider and deeper which probably explains some of the weight. They sound incredible for $100 speakers ($Cdn) it's almost hard to believe they are that cheap. Pretty good highs and mids and the bass is only ok, but together they sound very pleasant to the ears. I have some very nice atmos speakers for a home entertainment system along with a high-end sub that provides a sort of auditory-ecstasy, and of course, these speakers don't sound as good as that....but these are only $100. They do not have knobs for volume, bass, and power on the front which is a bit of a bummer for me, but I think that I will get used to using the computer volume control. I would recommend these to a friend in a heartbeat, in particular for a bedroom or even a small living room as they can fill a decent sized room with sound. They are super impressive bookshelf speakers. If you have $100Cdn (or much less in $US) then can't go wrong with these.

A pesar de ser de la gama baja suenan increíble vale la pena si es que estas buscando tus primeros altavoces en stereo 100% recomendados, edifier muy buena marca.

for the price you can not go wrong, loud, clear and with good base only negative thing is the volume control is on the back of them BUT i just use the windows volume control on my PC.

Only for desktop. Don't expect to use TV home theaters

These speakers work great. I was worried the 12 W per speaker might not be enough, but it booms plenty. They made some questionable choices in the design, like how they have two connections for the red/white RCA cords, but no connections for an auxiliary (headphone) cord, which is pretty standard for desktop computers, laptops, monitors, and phones. That's not a big deal though because they include a 3.5 mm to RCA adapter cord in the box. They also include an RCA to RCA cord, and some standard speaker wire that goes from your right speaker to the left speaker. I also thought it was strange that you can't toggle between the two inputs. If you connect your phone to one input and your desktop computer to the other, rather than selecting which one you want to hear, it just plays both simultaneously. I suppose that 'feature' might be useful to some people, but I don't see myself using it. I like how you can control the bass and volume (I set the speaker volume to max and use my PC's volume settings to adjust it on the fly), and how the grills come off so you can see the sound cones if you want. I paid $110 + tax for the speakers, so they aren't cheap, but you're getting a quality product here, so I feel I got my money's worth.
