โ An desertcart Best Children's Book of the Year selection โ "Well-paced, bursting with humor, and charmingly misanthropic."-- Kirkus Reviews starred review A penguin levels with human readers about what penguin life is really like--and it isn't all fun and games. A hilarious first collaboration from Jory John ( All my friends are dead. and Quit Calling Me a Monster! ) and Lane Smith ( The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales ). Have you ever considered running away to Antarctica? Of course you have! Because it's a land free of worries and responsibilities! All of your problems will surely be blown away by the icy winds of that lawless paradise! . . . Won't they? Think again, my friend. This penguin has come to tell you that his life down there is no more a picnic than yours is here. For starters, it is FREEZING. Also, penguins have a ton of natural predators. Plus, can you imagine trying to find your mom in a big ol' crowd of identical penguins? No, thank you. Yes, it seems there is no escaping the drudgery of your daily grind, whatever it might be. Or perhaps we've just learned that grumps are everywhere. . . . Jory John and Lane Smith let us decide. This book is sure to tickle kids' funny bones and will elicit appreciative sighs from the adults reading it aloud. Review: You need this book - The best book ever! It is hilarious, my daughter laughs every time we read it Review: Penguin Problem - The language is simple and th illustrations are great. It also teaches the animal's name.

Very cute book!
This was recommended by my director at my after school church program. We read the story to our after care children grades pre-k thru to 5th grade. They enjoyed it and had a few giggles with the Penguin complaining about everything. Definitely recommend. Hard cover, quality pages and illustration.

Good for kids and adults
This book is especially good for any complainer friend or family member you may have. :) It's a good reminder for both kids and adults to look for the good around them and that progress and growth take time. Illustrations are fun and colorful!

a solid story for caregivers wanting something without a classic happy ending
This story tells the existence of a penguin with... well, I'm sure you guessed it... problems. It's not a typical feel-good story, but with the right inflections and character, makes a good read aloud, and is fun to tell. Good for those days when we don't feel chipper and perfect, or to talk about how to deal with things when they don't go our way.

Laugh out Loud Funny with Unassuming Charm
This book is laugh out loud funny with unassuming charm as can be expected only from Jory John. The story is sweet and relatable to anybody who has ever woken up on the wrong side of the tundra and just needs a little perspective. Lane Smith's illustrations are brilliantly and humorously done and accomplish a seamless, cohesive design throughout. Absolutely loved it!

A Great Book for Kids Having a Tough Time
My 4-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in December. I got her this book for Christmas. Our whole family loves the way that this book acknowledges crappy situations and puts them into perspective. This is the only life we have. We might as well make the best of it...even if it is really cold right now and everything is trying to eat us.

Great book for kids about having a positive perspective on life
I liked this book because it was funny and insightful. The penguin, like many people today, is negative and complains about everything going on in his life, but an insightful walrus gives the penguin some perspective, whether he wishes it or not. Fun read.
