Best reference for explaining the complicated and somewhat confusing topic of Omega-3 fats
"Make it fun!" is what I heard Dr. Sears say at a conference I attended about Omega Threes recently. His new book takes a complete and fun look at what can often be a complicated and confusing topic - Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids. I have read many, many books about Omega-3s, but this work is not only complete and comprehensive, but it is approachable for the non-technical or non-medical practitioner type that wants to learn more about the essential need of our bodies for Omega-3 fats. Dr. Sears sprinkles his book with some whimsical cartoons and illustrations to help reinforce his points. He's got a way about taking this subject and making it understandable for the common person. If you are thinking of taking Omega-3s for your health, or you have a dear friend or family member that could use a nudge to improve their health, this is the book. Negatives? Well, perhaps some of the scientific biological explanations are not 100% accurate, and generalize some physiological functions to simplify the concepts that Dr. Sears is attempting to get across. Also, Dr. Sears strongly advocates in eating a certain number of servings of Salmon per week. Salmon is truly a marvelous food, but if you study more about fishery science and management, there simply aren't enough salmon in the world for all of us to eat 2-4 6oz servings each week. Farmed salmon are not a solution, because they use other wild-caught fish for their feed. He seems to gloss over the possibility for other fish, like sardines, fresh anchovy, mackerel, herring, and other small fish that are high in Omegas and are much more sustainable and cheaper on a nutritional basis than Salmon. Aside from these two small points, I believe that this book will do much to transform the health of those who take the time to read it.
