Will this give accurate readings of ambient air temperature?

Yes, but you would have to have the tip off of a table or whatever that might be a different temperature and hold it in your hand by the dial. All of these are able to be calibrated. Put in a cup of ice and set the dial to 33°.

can this be calibrated by nut on back for rotating dial?

I believe so. There is a nut on the back, but I haven't had to recalibrate mine yet.

What is the diameter of the stem? I've got a 3/16" hole that I'd like it to fit into

The one I have measures .150", so it should easily fit into a 3/16" hole which is .1875".

This is a very nice little thermometer. You can use it to check the temperature of the air coming out of your air conditioning vent. This works for the house for the car. You can also check the temperature of your enema water. It’s very critical not to go over 104°. You should be above 98° or you will have severe stomach cramps. Thank you

I use this to keep track of my oil Temps on my mini bike drilled a hole through the dip stick and put the baby in there. And even with the vibration and rapping the needle around the gage abit. She still works great and seems to be on point with the Temps
