Love Milkman powdered 2% milk. I've been using it for several decades. It had been easy to buy it in grocery stores but not now. I am so glad that I can still get it through Amazon. The use by date is about 2 years from the purchase date. I only get 4 packs at a time and normally use that up in less than a year. It is my back up if I am unable to get out to a grocery store. When served chilled, I think that it tastes as good as pasteurized store bought milk. In cereal, coffee or smoothies, you can't tell any difference. The convenience of always having milk available to use is worthwhile. Throughout COVID, it was just about the only milk that I used. During my younger years, my family relied on it for camping trips.

I love milk, but don’t always buy it. At times I need milk for recipes and don’t have milk on hand. I reluctantly started searching for powered milk (reluctant because of my experience as a child drinking powdered milk). Once I settled on Milkman, I was still skeptical. However, preparing was easy (storing in glass is better), chilled overnight, and was pleasantly surprised. It was delicious, creamy and lasted in the refrigerator for over a week. It’s shelf stable, with a long expiration date. I loved it so much, my niece gifted me additional packages.

I've been avoiding buying milk because of the plastic containers. It just guts me to throw that big plastic container into the recycle bin, not knowing if it will really get recycled. A friend recommended this powder to me. Unlike every other powdered milk I've tried, this actually dissolves instantly and completely. If your water is really cold, it doesn't dissolve as easily, but it does with lots of stirring. Your best bet is to mix with room temperature water, then refrigerate. As to taste, it tastes a lot like real milk. Not 100%, maybe between 90%-95%. That's good enough for me. When it's cold, and I'm drinking it with a peanut butter sandwich, or using it with cereal, I'm quite satisfied with the taste. I also mix some powder in with tea, to get milk in my tea. It works great for that. As to price, well, it's a lot pricier than real milk. Each packet gives you a quart of milk, which costs a little less than $2.50. That comes out to $10/gallon, versus around $3/gallon at the store. If you have a large family, I can see how that wouldn't be worth it. However, if you have a small household, and you want a couple of cups of milk a day for drinking or using with cereal, I think it's a good value. And you're not dumping a big plastic container into the recycle bin, nor filling a gas-guzzling truck with heavy milk containers to the local grocery store. Now, if I had access to milk in glass bottles, I'd drink that, but that option disappeared in my area in the last couple of years.

Milkman Lowfat Powdered Instant Milk. Class B. Mixes surprisingly easily in water to a clear smooth finish on the palate, richer and fattier mouthfeel than non-fat competitors is offset by an unpleasant "protein shake" flavor. Nevertheless, one of the best milk powders available. The same amount of milk powder was used, mixed into the same amount of room temperature water. The samples were all stirred until completely dissolved. I did not use hot water, because not all products dissolve into hot water. Products were allowed to rest only a minute before sampling, because my intention is to use milk powder per serving. We also compared them with actual non-fat milk. In general all products will taste better when allowed to rest overnight and fully chilled, but the goal of this test was to reveal comparative defects. I have tried: Augason Farms, Carnation, Country Cream, Country Fresh, Emergency Essentials, MilkMan, Nestle, Nido, Organic Valley, Peak, and Provident Pantry. In general, they fall into three categories: A. Emergency Essentials (formerly Provident Pantry). This is quite tolerable and tastes as close to actual milk. It acquires a very slightly sour, burnt taste when mixed into hot water, tea, or coffee; however, it does mix easily into hot water, and overall it is palatable. This is the best powdered non-fat milk. B. MilkMan. Tentatively placed into Class B, because although it is the best low-fat powdered milk product, it has a slightly off-putting “protein” flavor (if you have ever had a protein shake, protein bar, etc. you know what I mean.) Still, it mixes easily into water. It’s quite expensive as well. For my money, I did not feel the slightly richer body was worth the “protein shake” flavor. C. Everything else. All other products suffer from various defects: sour, acrid, bilious flavors; clumping, foaming, significantly increased effort and time to dissolve in water, inability to mix directly with hot water, separation in tea or coffee, grainy mouthfeel. As a caveat, the flavor of Organic Valley is Class B, but its finicky preparation, clumping, and cost put its overall score in Class C. I also encourage people to seek out “The Great Powdered Milk Taste Test” online. It’s a good review, but it’s a bit out of date, since there have been some company mergers/name changes and it left a few products out.

I hesitated to buy it because growing up with 6 kids my parents couldn’t always afford whole milk in the carton. So we always drank “powdered milk” which was not very good. But this is great We don’t drink a lot of fresh milk so even the smallest size tends to spoil before we use it up. I just tried this because I figured I could keep it for a long time and use it for the few times we have breakfast cereal, making cornbread etc. This works fine. Dissolves easily and surprisingly it tastes pretty good. I’m satisfied.

This is a high-quality item. I mainly use it for my coffee, and it tastes great. It's good for people who want to have a little milk in their diet. It's easy to have on hand and store.

Good for cooking but I don’t care for the chalky taste when drinking it plain.

This is unquestionably the best powdered milk product on the market. The packaging has been updated to seal in freshness— a very good improvement from way back in the day when packages were porous and paper-like. It mixes well—it has enough cream to taste rich, but not so much that you have to use hottest water to get it disolved— like the competitor’s products. They’re also portioned into one-quart envelopes that keep the rest of the product fresh for years. You don’t have to open a 16-gallon package or container that starts the clock ticking. Once cold, it’s almost like drinking real milk. GREAT to keep in hand for baking and emergencies.
