I bought this knife because I have a 6" Spyderco kitchen knife that I bought about seven years ago. This new knife is very good and less expensive than my old one. The old one has a better wood handle and VG-10 steel which stays sharper longer. The new knife is thinner and more flexible. I have enjoyed using the new knife to cut meat, fruit and vegetables. I also throw it in the dishwasher as opposed to handwashing. If you have this knife and a good paring knife you are close to having 90% of all you need in the kitchen. I have around twenty kitchen knives and this is the one I reach for first.

Prior to purchasing this knife, I've had only the Spyderco Sharpmaker. I bought this as a housewarming gift for one of my friends, who happens to be a knife aficionado like me. He's personally quite scared that he'll cut a finger or hand off. If you know someone that likes knives, they tend to get the 'Bug' of buying more knives. When it arrived it came in a very plain cardboard box with their logo, inside the box was the holy grail of a utility kitchen knife. While first handing the knife the first thing you will notice is how light it is compared to your previous kitchen knives. Due to the molded handle, the knife tends to be tip heavy, this may be a problem for those who prefer to chop instead of slicing action. The sharpness out of the box was a little worrying, typically I like to test the sharpness of all my knives when I first get them. If Spyderco was aiming for 'scary sharp', they definitely nailed it with this knife and the shallow cuts on my fingers. When compared to MAC Professional knives, I would rate them on par with the Spyderco for sharpness. If you ever cut bread with a non-serrated knife and you had this knife, you'll probably be amazed. However, if your more into knifes with a heavy/chunkier handle, balanced in the middle, or chop mostly, you might be better off with other Japanese knife manufacturers, like Global, MAC, Shun, etc.
