Mastering the Nikon D7100 by Darrell Young provides a wealth of experience-based information and insights for owners of the new D7100 camera, exploring the features and capabilities of the camera in a way that far surpasses the user's manual. Darrell helps the user navigate past the confusion that often comes with complex and powerful professional camera equipment, guiding readers through the features with step-by-step setting adjustments; color illustrations; and detailed how, when, and why explanations for each option. Every button, dial, switch, and menu configuration setting is explored in a user-friendly manner, with suggestions for setup according to various shooting styles. Darrell's friendly and informative writing style allows readers to easily follow directions, while feeling as if a friend dropped in to share his knowledge. The learning experience for new D7100 users goes beyond just the camera itself and covers basic photography technique. Review: Buy and read this book if you have a Nikon D7100! - I agree with all the positive reviews here. This is the second Nikon book I bought written by Darrell Young. (The other one is for the Nikon D90.) He has an uncanny ability to clearly and concisely help the reader understand everything about the Nikon D7100. He gives great explanations for all the settings as well as personal recommendations as to how he uses the camera under various conditions. The book is easy to read and I highly recommend it to anyone who is new to the Nikon D7100. And that goes for first-time DSLR owners as well as enthusiasts and professionals. You owe it to yourself to get this book (or one similar to it) if you want to fully understand your Nikon D7100. This is a very powerful, sophisticated camera with an enormous amount of settings. This book will help you use it correctly and enjoy all it has to offer. I've read a few negative reviews about the D7100 (mostly about focusing problems) and I'm pretty sure those people just don't understand how to use this camera's great automatic focusing mechanism under all circumstances. This is very critical for any DSLR camera. If you're trying to depend only on the camera's owner's manual, you are doing yourself (and the camera) a great injustice. Get this book and read it as you play with your new toy. You'll be glad you did, as it will make you a better photographer! Review: A Must Have for new D7100 Owners - especially amateurs. - This was the first book I bought when I got my new Nikon 7100. It is my first high quality (expensive) DSLR. The book is well-written by an author who is obviously expert with this and many other Nikon products. If you're like me, when you first get the camera you're overly cautious in pushing buttons and adjusting settings. The thing is a little intimidating, frankly. I'm sure many people who buy this camera are prone to set it to Auto and fire away, vowing to learn all the other "stuff" later. Young is very successful in getting the reader to the point where you know how and what changes you are making and what the results will be on the image as a result. He walks the reader through the several menus on the camera and made me much more comfortable as a result. I have since bought two other books on the 7100: Busch's Field Guide and Battdorf's From Snapshots to Great Shots. While discussing the same camera, all are a little different, all are valuable and all take a bit of a different approach. I'm just a little nuts like that I suppose. When you consider what you spent on the camera, the tri pod, the external flash, the bag and what you will spend on the 70-200mm VRII lens (and you will buy that eventually) the cost of these books is miniscule and the information is really valuable. I highly recommend Mastering the Nikon D7100. If Nikon was smart, they would include this book with every purchase of this camera and every other camera they make.

A Must Have for new D7100 Owners - especially amateurs.

Very thorough coverage of every facet of the Nikon D7100. Excellent photographs clearly show all menus and features of the camera. I like that the author references all page numbers in the user guide that comes with the camera. The authors writing style makes it is easy to understand and navigate even the most complicated aspects of the D7100's operation. This book is not some dry rehash of the user manual, but a friendly welcoming guide that is a pleasure to read.

Much Needed Book to Understamd the Nikon D7100
I got my my Nikon D7100 about 2 years ago and as with most Nikon manuals I needed a real book on how to set up and use this very complex camera. At that time Darrell Young had published a D7000 book which helped a great deal in setting up the camera. I waited until he finally came out with the D7100 book and have read it over and over as this camera is very sophisticated and at time confusing as Nikon gives you way to many ways to do simple things like set the ISO. What I like about his writing style is that he is very concise, sticks to the subject with only the occasional aside and he makes recommendations for how he sets his camera up as primarily a landscape photographer shooting in auto aperture. However, he does make recommendation for photographers that shoot sports and mostly work in auto SS or all manual. He has also included in this book a section on the histogram, the triangle of exposure (ISO, Aperture. and Shutter Speed), white balance, and some thoughts on post processing. His writing is so good I bought his other book on basic photography. It is more than an introduction on the above concepts of photography and explains them in a way that take complicated concepts and brings them into focus so to speak for those who are not professional photographers with a lifetime of experience. He writes these books for Nikon probably because they do not want to take the time to explain this computer like camera. I highly recommend his writing.

Excellent Manual
This book is wonderfu! It is soooo much easier to understand than the owner's manual. The pictures are in color, explanations are clear and concise without a lot of the "techy jargon" that a newbie like me hasn't learned to translate yet. The author speaks "to" his reader, not "at" his reader. He not only tells you how to set up and use the D7100, but gives his recommendations for setting up the camera, as well. This gives a beginner a place to start in the use of this somewhat complicated piece of equipment. Mr. Young has used this camera extensively himself and understands absolutely everything it is capable of doing, and he communicates its use very well to his reader. I went through each page of this manual with my camera in hand, and not only did I learn about the D7100, but I also learned about other helpful equipment and software that I might need. I consider this book as much as an investment into my photography as any lens or other gear. I could not recommend this book more. In fact, I liked this book so much I have purchased Darrel Young's book on basic photography called "Beyond Point-and-Shoot".

Great book for a great camera.
If you own a Nikon D7100 and own or have downloaded the user manual, you already know how dry the text can be, and difficult it is to wade through it and learn what you need to know to operate the camera. Darrell Young has solved those problems with his truly great instruction manual, Mastering the Nikon D7100. From the first page to the last, the author treats the subject of learning both the basics and the more complex operations of the D7100 - plus more than a few tricks that the Nikon user manual doesn't cover - with charm, wit, humor and a vast knowledge of Nikon products. In short, he knows what he's writing about and he presents it without once sounding like the Voice From the Mountaintop, a fault suffered by so many photography experts who write books and/or blogs, who never miss a chance to remind you that they are experts. The "do it my way or else" tone is thankfully missing in Mastering the Nikon D7100. If all you want to know are the basics, the D7100 user manual will show you what you need to know. But, as the title says, if you want to master the D7100, and learn a lot of tricks along the way that will help you add and improve your photography skills with all cameras, Mastering the Nikon D7100 is the book for you.

The Nikon published manual isn't that bad. All the information is there even if poorly ...
One would think that after years of badly written, complicated, user unfriendly, unattractive, manuals Manufacturers would have wised up and contracted the work to people who know how to write user's manual. The Nikon published manual isn't that bad. All the information is there even if poorly presented. BUT! NIKON GET WITH IT and talk to Darrell Young. This guy seems to know what needs to be done to present information in a clear way. Cameras like the D7100 have a fabulous amount features and some of them are not obvious. I bought the book after getting my new camera and went through the initial setup procedure with no problem everything is clear, and amazingly when you push a button the display shows what the book shows! has anyone tried that with the software manufacturers? the screen often shows something different than the book. NOT HERE. I love this book and in fact I got a copy for my kindle so I don't have to haul stuff. So If I forget something it's a quick retrieval. I also like the information on photography principles such as white balance. It is well explained. This book is a good buy

WOW pretty much sums up the camera and this book
Having had a prior Nikon DSLR and time for an upgrade, the D7100 was purchased. WOW pretty much sums up the camera and this book. Please trust me when I say this is the only book you need to purchase to learn about this awesome camera!!! I had purchased two other books and several 'cheat sheets' prior to discovering Darrell Young's book. Those would not have been necessary had I discovered this book first. The information is presented in detailed, easy to understand language. Screen shots are provided to illustrate the information provided. Darrell provides camera setting recommendations and explains why he recommends them. The Nikon manual does not cover all the camera capabilities nor does it explain things as clearly, and adequately as Darrell Young does. Whether you are a novice, intermediate or advanced photographer, this book is a must have! Mastering the Nikon D7100 should meet your expectations in every way! I am sure you will learn things about your new D7100 that you may not have ever imagined. If you don't believe me, borrow a copy from your local library. I'm sure you will want your own edition!!

A Comprehensive Well Written Supplement to the User Manual
The Kindle version of “Mastering the D7100” makes a superb companion to an electronic copy of the Nikon manual. Young explains each control and setting of the D7100 clearly and methodically. He introduces groups of related settings with the “big picture” view of the particular camera function that is being controlled. Each section ends with his recommended settings and the careful reasoning behind his choices. The book is logically organized and written in an easy-going, pleasant tone. To accommodate varying levels of photography knowledge, Young explores certain advanced or DSLR-specific topics in sidebars. The Kindle version of the book is searchable, which makes it easy to get a quick a refresher or review on a particular topic. I don’t consider “Mastering the D7100” to be a replacement for the Nikon Manual. The manual has extensive details about each control and setting. Young’s book offers the advice and wisdom of an experienced photographer who can help you master the wonderful, complex D7100 system.
