Kill Me Again

I really enjoyed this novel! The ending was fantastic! There were so many twists and turns. The main characters were larger than life and very sympathetic. I like the way characters such as Tom Douglas & Becly Robinson develop as people through each of Ms. Abott’s novels. Maggie Taylor really annoyed me until about 60% of the novel. For an attorney she sure acted stupid! She has threats against her life made, yet she goes riding bicycles along the edge of the woods with her kids! Her husband suddenly vanishes yet she refuses to call the police. Her and her children are threatened and followed yet she won’t call the police! She finds a photo of a dead woman on her husband’s phone but she won’t tell the police! She sees an old photo of her husband as a child with children from a foster home, and she comes to the conclusion he must be a neighbor of the foster kids! Despite the knowledge her husband has no birth certificate, and never told Maggie anything about his past life, his childhood, his siblings, relatives, or parents. She’s married to him for 10 years and never wondered about his background, and never tried to discover these things? Come on! How did she pass the bar exam let alone the LSAT? Not to mention her husband told her to never open his locked cupboard in the garage, and she never does? If that were me, I would have grabbed his keys while he was sleeping and opened that cupboard! At last Maggie finally smartens up and starts thinking like an attorney! She comes to her senses at the end and chooses to think for herself. She takes action! I loved the ending! Great novel! It was part police procedural, part psychological drama, part suspense. It’s definitely a book worth reading, as all Rachel Abbott’s novels are.

The switching narrative suits the book exceptionally well, none of the characters feel like clean slates, all are well developed with varying pasts and motives, above all they feel different, and it's always a plus for authors who're able to create different characters via different point of views, and to do so without sacrificing characterisation or making them feel too similar. The plot is fast-paced and exhilarating, the thinking process of Tom is a high point of this thriller, his calm and composed persona reminds me a lot of famous fictitious detectives like Sherlock Holmes, it's fun seeing how he ties into all of this. It's almost like there're two different stories going on, though all the arcs and subplots tie in nicely at the end. The writing is most impressive, you can really feel Maggie's fear and desperation seething through the lines, it's strong, compelling and extremely enticing; once you start reading and the plot starts to to pick up, it's near impossible to lay down the book. The biggest plot-wise negative though is Maggie's almost laughable way of dealing with some of the harsh scenarios stacked up against her. At times, the decision she makes is so out of character that it almost feels like she's not a lawyer to begin with. Maybe it's just me but I think she could've handled some of the situations in the book so much better, though she's undoubtedly a likeable character, being charmingly levelheaded and intelligent. And since there're not really many characters in the book, the "who dun it" gimmick it's trying to pull off kind of gets predictable at the end. The ending is fitting, though it's definitely not as ground breaking as some reviews drummed it up to be. Also, not attempting to look for realism in a crime thriller, but the end does feel a bit rushed and melodramatic. It's a good read overall, I had fun with the book. But if you're like me, who gets super paranoid when reading thrillers, always consciously picking up hidden clues that may reveal who's the culprit, and in constant bracing for an astronomical AND plausible twist, you will most likely end up feeling disappointed. The critical joints in the book are REALLY up front and obvious, so meticulous and veteran thriller readers might just easily foresee the ending from a mile away (after about 60-70% of reading). For casual readers, however, it's definitely worth checking out if you're into well-written, well paced and intriguing murder mysteries and detective stories.

I really enjoy Rachel Abbott s writing style. She has a way of keeping you engaged until the last end. Rarely have I been able to determine the ending or "who done it" before the very end.

The protaganist, was at times, not real believable. She is a criminal defense attorney, which in my experience as a professional involved in the legal system, should have portrayed her as less naïve, for one thing. Also, what's with the "sobs" emanating from her during stressful moments. Based on the author's other descriptive words for her, to be more believable, she should have been a little more stoic instead of sobbing, for crying out loud! And the "tears running down her face", seemed out of place, as well. The story itself was quite suspenseful and kept my attention and I had trouble putting the book down!

other great one from Rachel Abbott, this lady really knows how to write great books. In this book Maggie and her family have relocated to Manchester for Maggie to commence a new job. The children and Maggie adapt quite well to the move but the same cannot be said about her husband Duncan. One night Maggie has only just left work to return home when she receives a call from her son to say that Daddy has left and gone out right in the middle of preparing their dinner. Then when Maggie tries to call her husband to see why he has left the kids alone she then finds his phone has been disconnected. This all leads to a fantastic story and connects with the recent murders of several women who look like each other, Maggie included. Maggie soon finds out her husband is not who she thought he was and this is where we go on a wonderful journey of tension, suspense and pure excitement as we try to figure out what is going on. Great ending, just loved it, another that will stay with you to think about.

Loved the book, but surprised by the ending. I can usually figure it out before I get halfway into the book. That little thing at the end was a complete surprise. Not sure if I liked it or not.

This book was a whirlwind of a story! It had so many twists and turns that it would make your head spin. Just when you thought you had a handle on what was happening then BAM it would go in another direction. It made my heart pound just trying to figure out who was doing what. The ending was explosive and totally unpredictable. Wow just Wow!! This author has moved up to my favorite author!!

I think I got this book on a 99-cent special one day when I needed another book to read while on vacation. I've gotten various free books on my Kindle, and it's pretty hit or miss. Sometimes I find a new mystery author who I want to follow. This book wasn't free, but it was a good deal, and I got hooked. I liked it enough to read more of her books. I'd say it was a tightly-plotted mystery with a main character I could care about. She did drive me a little crazy with her Hamlet-like hesitation to act, but the author did a pretty good job of justifying her hesitation. The bad guys in this were really, really very bad, so much so that they were perhaps a little unbelievable. On the other hand, the way the main female character copes with the ever-changing news about her husband who she thought she knew is very believable, and I valued the book just for how well the author handled her situation. I wouldn't say this was a tip-top murder mystery, but it was definitely enjoyable and a good read, and I recommend it to anyone who's looking for a new author to follow.
