Adapted by leading screenwriter Andrew Davies, directed by Tom Harper and produced by BBC Wales and The Weinstein Company, War & Peace is a modern take on one of the most famous stories of all time. In 1805 when we first meet Pierre (Paul Dano), Natasha (Lily James), and Andrei (James Norton), they are all part of St Petersburg s glittering elite, but are fired-up with youthful ambition to find meaning in their lives. Kind-hearted but awkward Pierre, the illegitimate son of Russia s richest man, wants to change the world for the better. Handsome and gallant Andrei, frustrated with the superficiality of his life, seeks a purpose, while the beautiful and spirited Natasha is searching for true love. At the same time Napoleon's army edges ever closer to Russia's borders. As everything they thought they knew is questioned, Pierre, Andrei and Natasha find themselves in a time when Russian society is about to change forever. Review: Wonderful adaptation, but sadly, DVD doesn't include the deleted scenes that were shown in the U.K. Version - This TV version of War and Peace was so beautifully done--both visually and aurally absorbing. The use of the Russian Orthodox chants during some of the most emotional scenes, such as Pierre's duel with Dolokhov--and Lily James was absolutely lovely as Natasha Rostov. James Norton was well cast as Prince Andrei, but the dark dye on his hair was kind of a distraction. I don't understand the reason for it, and it looked fake. The standout actor, to me, was Paul Dano as Pierre. He perfectly conveyed the combination of idealism, confusion, awkwardness, and sweetness of that character. However, I also loved Jessie Buckley as Princess Marya, and I don't like the fact that the American version of the series excluded the scenes when Prince Vasily and his son Anatole go to Bald Hills to try and woo her, only for Anatole to screw it up by flirting with Mme. Bourienne. I thought at least this and other annoying omissions would be rectified in the DVD, where the scenes that were shown in Britain but not in the U.S. could be either reinserted or at least on the DVD as an extra feature, but sadly, the DVD was a disappointment in that regard. Shame on you, Weinstein Co. Review: Fantastic - This rendition of war and peace is visually stimulating and rather astonishing at the opulence of the Russian aristocracy. The script makes this convoluted story understandable and extremely exciting. Great cast, visual effects and directing. One of my favorites that I will rewatch again and again and still find things I didn’t see or understand before.

The best adaptation so far
I've seen three other versions of War and Peace besides this one (the one by Bondarchuk, the one where Henry Fonda (?!) plays Pierre, and the 1970's BBC version where Anthony Hopkins plays Pierre). While nothing can compare to the novel I would say that this is the best all-round version. I have minor quibbles with some of the casting but I like how the younger count Rostov's story is given its rightfully prominent place. The other versions had demoted him to a minor character. I don't know why Amazon lists this as 'season 1' because the entire story of War and Peace is contained on these 2 DVDs in eight 45 minute episodes. There are a few extras but nothing much.

Great mini-series version of this classic book
This mini-series (short series) is terrific. The story line and moral and character arcs that make the book a classic, are well brought out in this movie version. Great casting and excellent script. The scenes are beautifully shot as well. I really enjoyed the movie when it aired on TV and was sorry to see it be over. I was very pleased that it came out on DVD and that I can view it again. It begs to be watched more than once as there are nuances to the characters and the dialogue that might be even better appreciated the second (or third) time around.

Beautiful character development and cinematography. My heart is full and satisfied.
Watching this miniseries reinforced my desire to read the actual novel by Tolstoy. I'm a character development junkie and I loved watching how the characters grew and developed (or failed to) over time. The war, while devastating and violent, provoked change in the characters that might not have happened in the peaceful, wealthy Russian society, and the miniseries does an excellent job depicting this change in so many characters even though there are only 8 episodes. By then end, I found that I had compassion for characters that I started off disliking, and was happily surprised by the redemption and resolution by the final episode. The cinematography is gorgeous, and I'm not normally a big movie crier, but I loved these characters so much that I sobbed multiple times. My heart is full and ready to face the world with a little more empathy and courage, and if that doesn't make a good movie experience, I don't know what does. Thank you, BBC for this treasure.

read war and peace when i was about 18-19 years old! really good book, really long book! i believe bbc did a great job on this mini series! hard to condense a thousand+ page book to this series but bbc did it! and the actor choices were quite good i think! had a copy sent to my sister, who got me into russian novels in my youth!

WTH is going on here?
The UK DVD has a running time of 370 minutes, featuring 6 episodes--the original UK broadcast. The US DVD has a running time of 354 minutes, featuring 8 episodes--the US cable broadcast? I can assume, based on the UK reviews, that the UK version is the thing as scripted, filmed and broadcast. I can also assume that the US version has been re-cut and shortened to suit a broadcast format it wasn't designed for. It looks like that US viewers and shoppers have been shortchanged again, and that again the only safe way to see complete UK programs is to buy the UK version from Amazon UK or another UK seller, and watch it on a region-free player My rating for the UK DVD is 5 stars. My rating for the inferior US DVD is 1--only because 0 is not an option.

This is a wonderful adaptation of Tolstoy's great novel
This is a wonderful adaptation of Tolstoy's great novel. It's main rival the Russian film version from the 60s - although excellent - seems somewhat stodgy by comparison. It was also marred by a terrible English dubbing. The 1956 Hollywood version had some impressive scenes, but a comic book like script and was horribly miscast save for Audrey Hepburn as a lovely Natasha. This 2016 BBC mini-series is shorter than the Russian film, but maintains a literary quality worthy of its source. It is beautifully cast with a great Pierre in Paul Dano, a ravishing Natasha in Lily James and James Norton as a dashing Andrei. With an excellent supporting cast including Jim Broadbent and Gillian Anderson, intelligent direction from Tom Harper, and sumptuous cinematography, this should remain the cinematic choice of the novel for some time to come.
