Yes that is correct. It allows you to high speed charge without allowing data to be transferred.

does this still work if you plug the defender USB into your apple plug that plugs into the way instead of plugging the defender directly in the port?

I have an Apple device and the 'USB Defender' module goes between the USB end of your Apple lightning cable and the powere module or [as in my case] the USB port on my computer that I use for charging my phone. The smaller mini-plug goes directly into your Apple device.
