Lonely Planet Brazilian Portuguese Phrasebook & Dictionary 5 Review: Uma cerveja por favor! - I bought this on a whim when I needed a travel adaptor plug for a trip to Rio. It turned to be very helpful and fun to use. Its organized in practical sections depending on your situation (basic conversation, in a restaurant, sightseeing, at the airport, business, etc.). It also has a short English-Portuguese dictionary with some commonly used words. This a great little guide. Review: My friend loves it! - I bought this for my friend who is learning Brazilian Portuguese. I see him studying it often and that always puts a smile on my face. I'm so glad he enjoys this book! Before I gave it to him, I skimmed through the categories on the inside and it seemed like quite a good source of information. Glad I bought it!

A great travel aid for Brazil
We recently used this book on a week+ long vacation to Brazil. The book is great because it has many useful phrases, words and numbers that come in very handy in making transactions and traveling around in Brazil. The size is small enough to fit in your pants pocket or in a ladies purse or daypack, so you can carry it with you most of the time. If you have difficulty communicating, you can always point to the phrase or word(s) and when the other person sees it, they should understand.

Worth the Price
I'm learning (trying to learn) Portuguese. I've taken a class at a junior college and I've completed the Duolingo Portuguese course. I bought this book for the vocabulary list in the back. OK, enough about me, now on to the book and why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. There are mistakes in the glossary - not a lot of mistakes, but there are mistakes. For example • it says "mosteiro" is a mosque, but it's a monastery. • it says that a "recarregador de bateria" is a jumper lead (must be the British word for jumper cables). After doing many internet searches, I think jumper cables are "cabos de arranque" and "carregador de bateria" is a battery charger. I gave it 4 stars in stead of 5 because it has a few mistakes in it. Maybe that's a little harsh, but there's no option for giving it 4 1/2 stars or 4 3/4 stars. For learning Portuguese vocabulary, I like this book better than the 5,000 word frequency dictionary. The Lonely Planet phrase book has practical words where the frequency dictionary is geared towards reading the news or reading books. I guess most people buy this book to take with them on a trip to Brazil and look up a word or phrase whenever they need it. It shoud be adequate for this and it fits in a pocket. For $8, it's worth it.

Great pocket reference
Incredibly useful pocket size reference. Plan to carry this with me when I'm out and about. Excellent variety of topics and vocabulary.

SO HANDY!
This book came in handy when I quickly realized that the 10 phrases of Portuguese I'd learned before leaving the US would last me about 10 minutes in Rio. It's hard to write out proper Portuguese pronunciation instructions, but this book seemed to get me close enough to where I could be understood.

Fun buy
At the very least, I can say this book is fun. As advertised, it is chock full of phrases. Maybe too many. It favors some more complicated phrases (like how to arrange a one-night stand) over simple ones (like how to order a coffee). I am happy I bought it and my Brazilian relatives are all enjoying my new vocabulary words.

... from this book since pronunciation is critical and not easy to guess from the book
You can't learn Portuguese from this book since pronunciation is critical and not easy to guess from the book. However you can show the phrase from the book if in need so you will feel better having it with you, especially because it is small and light

This is a pocket-sized book of 250 pages designed to be helpful to tourists. There’s a 15-page introduction to the language, basic pronunciation and grammar, and some useful phrases, beginning with ‘Do you speak English?’ It’s then organised in sections covering popular activities such as camping, shopping, romance etc, and including such essential phrases as ‘Does your company have a green policy?’ ‘I’ve locked the keys inside (my car)’ ‘I love you’ and ‘I won’t do it without protection’. The actual dictionary section is comprised of only 31 pages (English/Portuguese) and 29 pages (Portuguese/English). It won’t be as helpful as I’d hoped it might be in understanding Brazilian poetry, but the grammar section is a good start. Even though it’s not quite what I needed (my bad), I think it’s excellent for its intended use, and I should give it 5 stars. Keith Davies Jones
