It works on all standard SAE and Metric fittings, there is no need to beat on it hard, the technique is to allow the penetrating oil to work its way in by "tapping" on the plunger end with a light hammer to simply help force it in a little quicker. It may not work on everything, but we have had good luck with this tool so far.

Can you remove the zerk and attach directly to the machine where the zerk screw in, thus bypassing the zerk? mine in clogged beyond the "new" zerk.

you probably could do that, I don't remember if the thread pitch is 1/4-28 or 1/8" pipe but if I were you I'd take your zero out and run a drill bit in as far as possible to remove old dry grease then use this tool loaded with WD40 or ATF and let it sit over night and repeat. This tool works well but give it time to penetrate. Good luck!
