Yes they can. Be sure you use what is recommended for wood floors. There are polishing pads available.

Not sure of the material but, if you've ever seen a buffing pad on a floor polisher these are the same thing. It appears they come in varying degrees of coarseness so you'll have to know what purpose you're going to use them for.
