This guide brings Chinese astrology back to its ancient roots, providing all the information you need for understanding one of the world's oldest systems of divination. The ancient Chinese people developed a sophisticated science of astrology that continues to have profound influence in China today. Rooted in the fundamentals of Taoism, it evolved into a system vastly different from Western astrology. Rather than determining personality by the time of the year in which you are born, in Taoist astrology it is the year itself that determines your character. The years form a twelve-year cycle of signs, each named after an animal. Additionally, your personality depends on which of the five traditional Taoist elements you are born under--water, wood, fire, earth, or metal. This makes for a cycle of sixty unique signs. Taoist Astrology includes information for each sign's personality, compatibility, child-parent relations, and rising and falling fortunes during the twelve-year cycle. Discussions of yin and yang, Confucianism and Buddhism, Taoist alchemy, and the connection between Taoist astrology and Western astrology give you all the background you need for understanding one of the oldest systems of divination known to humanity. Taoist Astrology differs from other books on the subject by grounding its concepts in the ancient traditions from which it originated. Review: Brilliant, Succinct โ exactly what I needed! - This brilliant book provided core information that I havenโt found elsewhere that has enabled me to look at a a personโs birthday Iโm calculate their BaZi in my head with much of the relevant information so I donโt need to go look anything up โ absolutely wonderful! All years ending in numeral 0โ1 are yang/yin metal years, 2โ3 are yang/yin water, etc. The 2-hour birth time window is equivalent to the rising sign in western and Vedic astrology which is seen in the BaZi hour pillar and has an important influence on the individual and especially when analyzing compatibility. What an excellent, clear, informative book! I hope there will be more from this author. Review: Great book to use to understand yourself & others - Well written and helps you understand yourself and others better.

From a Taoist's perspective...
This is the most detailed and accurate source for Taoist astrology. I should know since I'm a practitioner of Taoism. I have been studying Taoism and Taoist astrology for over ten years. Online or offline this is the best resource for learning Taoist astrology. Everything you need to know is in this book. I have just two complaints concerning the dates: 1) There are numerous discrepencies in the starting & ending dates of the years listed in the back of the book. For example - The end date for lunar 2007 (Purple Boar) is listed as 2/6/2008 yet the start date for lunar 2008 (Yellow Rat) is listed as 2/2/2008. That's a five day overlap which is technically impossable. The actual starting date is 2/7/2008, I have the charts to prove it! Hopefully mistakes like these are just type-os. 2) On page 18 Susan Levitt lists solar 1996 as lunar 4694. If you use the traditional Chinese year counting method of counting the reigning years of the eperors, then she is wrong. The actual year is 4693. The reason for the one year discrepency is the reign of the first emperor, who according to LEGEND NOT FACT, took control 8 days prior to the start of the new year. So the modern communist government counts that extra 8 days as one year. I, like many people including historical scolars, believe this story to be nothing more than government propaganda to make everyone think the Chinese calendar is a little older than it really is. The Chinese communist government has been known for pulling stunts like this for decades to make themselves feel superior to the rest of the world. In short, the modern COMMUNIST calendar is wrong and the ancient, traditional Taoist calendar is correct. Which makes this year 2010 (White Tiger) the year 4707 not 4708. Everything else in the book is completely accurate. This is an otherwise excellent book that every student of Taoist/Chinese astrology should have, in fact it should be the only book.

Amusingly Accurate!
I attended one of Susan's workshops in SF over 20-yrs ago, and purchased her book soon afterwards. I have often referred to her book "Taoist Astrology", both personally and professionally. I am a professional Palmistry and Tarot card reader. Whenever I would be hired for entertainment parties or individual readings I would invariably include a brief reference to Susan Levitt's book to help explain (from another aspect) a person's personality or relationship with another person. -- I once was invited to a party with eight couples present. But one couple was consistently being very 'mean' to each other. Their "Taoist Astrology" showed their ages were 6-yrs. apart and "enemies of each other", BOTH their main signs AND their "double-rising signs"! -- This is definitely a "coffee table" book to have for all. Susan's well-written book provides amazing insight (with a 'chuckle'). I may not have married my first wife--'my worst enemy'--if I would have checked Susan's book, first. I highly recommend "Taoist Astrology".

One of the most authentic books on the subject I've ever read.
This book provides a fresh perspective on a subject that is all too often simply regurgitated. Ironically, it does this by teaching the original Taoist philosophy on Chinese Astrology. I enjoyed how it gives a brief, but credible history and origin of "Chinese Astrology." Something that is oft overlooked in many other writings. It also recognizes more than just the well-known inter-triad sign compatibilities by making the reader aware of some other fantastic, but little known Yin-Yang parings. This book could easily replace the vast majority (99%) of other books on the same topic. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Chinese Astrology.

A dip into the orient
Really interesting to see and match up with the western ideas which often confirm overlap, can be a lighthearted issue or deeper if you want it to be.
