WORKS SURPRISINGLY WELL!!!
I was not expecting to like this mopping tool before I ordered it and when I opened the box I was sure it was going to be returned based purely on it's appearance. The thing is only 7"x7" and it looks too tiny to really do anything. I was however quite surprised on how well it works. We have 3 different types of flooring throughout our house consisting of vinyl sheet flooring, engineered hardwood and carpet. The kitchen (11"x16"), breakfast nook (11'x11') and all of the 2-1/2 bathrooms are vinyl. The entrance foyer (8'x18') is engineered hardwood. Before using the Braava in either of it's wet modes, it is recommended that you thoroughly vacuum or sweep the floor because the Braava is only made to mop floors, not to vacuum or sweep them. If you don't vacuum or sweep first, you will wind up pushing small debris around the room and creating a mess. The first test was to tackle the breakfast nook. I used the invisible wall mood to prevent Braava from going into the kitchen which adjourns the breakfast nook. Rather than having the Braava maneuver around the table and chair legs, I flipped the chairs over and put them on top of the table and pushed the table to the far end of the room. As the Braava did it's zig-zag pattern in the room, I re-positioned the table a few times to keep the table legs out of the path of the Braava. The breakfast nook is a perfectly square room and the Braava completed the task perfectly. The last thing it did was to go around the perimeter 0f the room to get all the edges. Our carpeted family room adjourns the breakfast nook on one side and the Braava did not go past the edging of the carpet. Job done perfectly!! The next task (after recharging) was the kitchen. Again, I set up the invisible wall to prevent Braava from going back into the breakfast nook. I was amazed as the Braava began it's job. It began going the length of the kitchen and when it got about 12' into the room it made a u-turn and came back to where it started. It continued the zig-zag overlapping pattern until it completed the first 12' of the room. It then traveled beyond the first 12' and began a zig-zag pattern in the opposite direction until it completed the entire floor. It then spent considerable time going in different directions until it eventually covered all of the edges of the kitchen. It was actually interesting to watch. When it was finished, I gave a close inspection and found that it had cleaned the floor as good or better that if I had done it by hand with a mop. I had intentionally let the floor get dirtier than I normally would knowing I was going to be testing the Braava and it passed the test with flying colors. As to exactly how it works, I think that the iRobot engineers put a lot of thought into the design of the tool. It uses warm water only and the cleaning agent is in the pad itself so I don't think there will be a clogging problem with the jet in the future because of residual cleaners. It uses so little water, I will probable use distilled water in the future to help prevent jet clogging down the road. The pad itself vibrates to help the cleaning action, similar to the action of a hand-held sander. With the wet mop pad on it, the Braava moves in a Y pattern much like you would do using a sponge mop or swiffer. When you put the damp mop pad on it, the Braava only goes forward and back and squirts less water on the floor. This is what I used in the foyer on the engineered wood flooring because I do not want too much water on the wood floor. The third choice of pad is the dusting pad that uses no water and causes the Braava to got in a continuous forward zig-zag motion. The Braava senses which pad you are using and operates accordingly. One of the things that surprised me was the size of the battery. When I unboxed the Braava and saw the battery, I thought that it was going to be the weak point of the tool. The instructions state that it must be charged for two hours before using and it probably took pretty close to that on the first charge. When it finished the first 11'x11' room, I put the battery back in the charger and it only took about 15 or 20 minutes for it to get back to full charge. The only caveat I would add to this review is that it works extremely well on smooth floors without high and low spots. I would imagine it will not do as well on heavily textured tile or stone floors especially if they have deep grout lines. I have seen other reviewers say this and I can fully understand why. My wife and I are both in our eighties and the Braava is definitely going to make our lives a lot easier.

LIFE CHANGING for people who are OCD about having clean floors (love it so much we bought two!)
This machine is the most amazing houseware I have ever purchased. I don't say that lightly. I originally bought this guy to wash the bathroom floor in between days when I steam mop it. I'm OBSESSIVE about keeping the grout in my master bathroom clean and the floor debris-free (plus I have a health care issue that sort of dictates that the bathroom be kept as clean and sterile as possible) and I really felt myself being pulled toward scrubbing the floor daily. That's not good for the bathroom or my back (I was born with Spina Bifida), so I thought I could get this little robot and have it wash the floor for me so I wouldn't feel like I needed to be scrubbing daily. The Braava works wonderfully. It's NOT a deep scrubber- it won't get your grout white after years of grime, and it's not going to take the place of a regular deep clean. It WILL clean all smooth surfaces (tile, laminate, vinyl, etc.) and it does pass over the grout enough times to moisten it and get up any debris. I run it twice with two re-useable/washable pads (order those separately, Roomba makes their own, but we do have third party ones that are fine, too). As far as tile, I rinse the re-useable pad and then before the machine runs, I spray a little puddle of anti-bacterial Windex or Scrubbing Bubbles on the floor in the robot's path, so the pad soaks up the cleaner as it goes by and then cleans the entire floor with it. You can run the robot in water-only mode, but I like using a cleaning agent. Here's a trick- if you are worried it's not hitting all the surfaces in your rooms, get a washable marker and leave little dots around the areas you want to make sure get hit. If the robot washes those areas, you'll know because the mark will be gone. If not, you can use the mobile phone app to instruct the robot to deep clean that specific area (plus the marker wipes up with a little bit of water). The surprising thing about this cleaner is something I didn't even consider when i bought it- dry cleaning mode. There are swiffer-esque pads available (disposable) and they get up EVERYTHING. Hair, fur, seed, dirt, sand, crumbs, dry cat food, etc. I wasn't expecting to use this machine in any other way except for the wet scrubbing mode in my bathroom, but I loved the dry sweep mode so much I bought a SECOND robot for our great room and I literally start it up in the morning with a dry sweeper pad on it and leave it running all day. It goes through the kitchen, entry and living room and whenever it cycles out, I just move it to a new area and restart it. I get several hours of cleaning from one battery charge. We have four cats, two birds, plus my thirteen year old and my husband (both who shed more hair than the cats it would seem, which kinda grosses me out...) so there's always something on the floor no matter how many times a day we vacuum and "zip up" with the stick vacs. So now we just have this guy running and even with us vacuuming daily, it still gets up enough stuff to gross me out and want several more of these, to run in little formation, all over my house. We also use it to clean the laminate floors- out of all the combinations we try the best is either using one of their disposable wet pads or using a dry re-usable wet pad and spraying a bunch of Bona on the floor in front of the unit when we start it. There *can* be a little streaking, but I am okay with that- I'd much rather have that than have gross sticky spots of that weird and disgusting oily/waxy bloom that we get with other cleaners. I have never had a product that I have found so useful and time saving and life enhancing like this one. If you're a clean floor freak, you HAVE to get this. Order a bunch of re-useable/rewashable wet pads and a bunch of the disposable dry sweeper ones. JUST GET THIS. (sorry for the all caps scream-y yelling thing, but I can't recommend this enough.)

Works well
As other reviews state, this is not for scrubbing or deep cleaning. It's probably not heavy enough to scrub. When it stays connected to the app, it does a great job. Mine has been getting repeatedly disconnected from the app, so I changed my rating from four to three stars. I just move all my furniture out of my cramped kitchen and let this bad boy do all the work! Yes, it goes around furniture, but I prefer to move mine. It even mops perfectly all the way around the door stops that stick out of the walls! It also goes on the sides of the toilet in my (small) bathroom. It will not fit behind my toilet, though. It performs exactly as stated. It has a "lighthouse" feature that creates a virtual wall if you desire. You have to do that each time you clean, but it's easy: just hold the button down until the horizontal lights come on. It creates only one virtual wall per cleaning session, though, so you have to figure out which way to face it. It will not go behind the virtual wall. The only issue I have with it is the water tank. It's hard to tell whether it's actually filled. I wish I could see inside or that there were an indicator like on a clothes iron. Also, before I connected it to the app, it was spraying as if it were damp sweeping, even in wet mop mode. But after downloading the app and connecting the Braava Jet robot, it now sprays so much water that it saturates the mopping pad and leaves a wet trail behind itself. Luckily, it doesn't show any streaks on my floors, but it might be a problem with other kinds of floors. It's definitely a slipping hazard in wet mop mode. You have to let the floor dry to make sure you don't slip. Before I had the app, the floor would be dry instantly in wet mop mode. The app shows three different levels of water release for mopping, but no matter which level I selected, it still left the floor wet. I'm wondering about quality control now. Is this the way it is supposed to work? Or is mine faulty? I ordered a replacement because of the spraying issue. The second one kept getting stuck, so I kept the wet trailer one. I would say that if your machine keeps getting stuck, order a replacement and see how that goes. The one I kept has never gotten stuck. I also am disappointed that you can't put any cleaner in the robot, so you have to keep buying their single-use wet mop pads or spray the floor with cleaner if you're using a washable pad. But they do offer a cleaner that they say can go in any of their mops, so maybe that will work well with the washable pads. Some people have said they would just use vinegar instead of water in the tank, or a mixture of water and vinegar, but even diluted vinegar can corrode things, so I'll only do that to descale it if the sprayer stops working. To prevent the sprayer from getting clogged, one could use distilled water. Bottom line: I'm looking forward to getting an improved model in a few years, but for now this thing is awesome and well worth the ~$110 I paid for a used one. It didn't even look used. The only thing is that not all the pads were in the package. That's worth a $60 savings to me. Finally, I think that some people who were not satisfied with it must not have swept first. It's common sense to sweep before you mop, so that same reasoning should be applied here. I had the robot do a sweep mode before the mop mode, and it worked out great. This robot does a great job at dry sweeping, damp mopping, and wet mopping. I am considering purchasing another battery and charger so I can sweep and mop my small bathroom and small kitchen all in one go. If you have a large area to mop, you'll probably want to buy an extra battery and charger.

Dad loves his Braava!
I tried adding a video, but somehow that violated community rules. My dad named his Braava “Frank”, which is kind of adorable. This is a very different machine to the Roomba 690 vaccum that we have at home. It turns out that it is exactly what my dad wanted and needed, however, and because of that, it garners 5 stars in its first week home. I was sitting with my almost-elderly father the other week and we were talking about his aging cat and his wood floors and how it’s tough for him to keep up with both these days. He described to me what he wanted — basically some sort of device that will handily spot-clean a chosen area of the floor after the cat does something nasty or if it’s been raining and dad has tracked mud in. Being an avid Amazon shopper and a Roomba 690 fan, I did a quick search for robot mops and gave him a couple of choices (different brands and models). Based on reviews and the luck we have had with our 690, we went with this model of wet/dry machine. When it arrived, I took it over to dad’s house and we opened it up and set up the battery to charge. We read the simple manual and looked at the three different mopping options. I had ordered both disposable and reusable pads for the machine, so he wouldn’t have to rely on me to order new pads if he ran out. When the battery was charged, which took about 75 minutes the first time, we put “Frank” to the test. Dad loves it. Not only did we run it in a few areas the first day to see how it would move and think, he runs it on the dry mop cycle every single day now, sometimes in more than one area. It’s picking up more crud and dust than my dad could ever get to himself with a broom or his stick vacuum. The robot is super-quiet, both in operation and in the adorable little songs it sings. It makes our Roomba vacuum seem like an armored tank to its Smart car. Yet don’t let its size or its silence fool you — this is a smart, tough little machine that does its job exceptionally well. If you own a Roomba vacuum, note that the process of using this Braava is quite different. It does not sit on a charging station and will not run autonomously. You do not need to download the app to run it, either. My dad just charges the battery, pops it in, takes Frank wherever he wants a cleaning job done, sets him down in the right orientation to the space, and let’s him go. Frank returns to his original starting point after cleaning the corners. Frank is awesome! My birthday is coming up and this is the only thing on my list. Even with a Roomba 690, which we run every day, I would love to have another machine that I can spot clean with, especially for wet cleaning. I hope my husband reads this review. 😊 So far, this machine is well worth the price and my father is very happy with its performance. He reports it got stuck on a cord this week, but as he always runs it when he is home, it’s never a problem to pick it up and place it in a different area, away from dangers. He also said the cliff sensors worked great the first day the Braava discovered his stairs. So far, so good! If Frank becomes sentient and starts demanding macaroni pictures or anything, I’ll update. Now I’ve just got to get over there with some googly eyes.

Battery must be removed and charged on a charger (and wheels only last 28 days)
MAY 29 - This thing requires more repair than anyone is going to want to do. The battery died after a month. Bought 2 more batteries ($30). One of those stopped working today, and they're 2 weeks old. the mopper pads are $9 every 10 days. TO date, I've probably spent an additional $100 on this thing. it's expensive to run. It requires a lot of repair. It's like everything made for this mopper is just junk. when it works, it does a fine job, but getting it to work reliably is just insane. I've been fighting it all morning today. I've had enough. I'm going to have to buy something else. An additional 28 days later - The tread came separated from the wheel. This causes the mopper to run around in circles and not mop. Ordered new wheels and treads, but I would expect the wheels and treads to last a lot longer than 28 days. First up - I wouldn't recommend paying full price for this. Wait until you see a used/damaged one and get that. It just isn't worth $180-$200. the feature listing makes it sound more awesome than it is. It just isn't that awesome. Like others have said - It's a mechanized wet-jet. It probably shouldn't be priced higher than $75. So, what's wrong with it 1. Does not have a docking station. It has a charger, and you must remove the battery and charge it on the charger. This is annoying. 2. You cannot schedule it. There is no way to set it to go at a certain time. The ability isn't even in the irobot home app. It may be a feature in other models, but not this one. 3. Even with the app, you still have to be within 10 feet of it to get it to go. So, does it actually clean? Yes, it actually cleans. Once you get the battery charged and in the slot and the water port filled, it does clean. It runs for 60-90 minutes. Then, it goes to find the place where you set it down, and it returns to that place. However, out of the 3 times I've used it so far, it only found that place once. So, you're going to be hunting it. Does it clean in an organized fashion? More or less. It tries to go in straight lines. However, it seems to get confused when it encounters an object. It sort've muddles around a bit before it figures out where it needs to be. The good part about this is that it won't spray if it thinks it's already mopped in that spot. So it doesn't really waste any water/cleaning solution. It just wastes battery. The battery does seem to charge fairly quickly. Within a couple hours. Does it get stuck? Not as bad as a robot vacuum. So far, I've had it get trapped between a vent and a wall and under the door of the fridge Does it climb? No. If you've got anything beyond a quarter of an inch, it won't roll over it, and if it is a quarter of an inch, it may go over it one way but not back again. It is definitely an intro mopper. It does get the job done, and if you have multiple rooms to clean, you can take the battery out, charge it, refill the water, set it back down and send it off again without changing the cleaning pad. I like it because it does what I wasn't doing in the first place - mopping my floors. Since, I'm not going to do it, this thing does a better job than me. If you already mop your house. You have time to mop your house, you won't like this.

Two Months Of Continuous Use And It's A Solid 3-Stars.
After two months of dedicated use, I think I'm finally qualified to give this a fair review. Just like with most domestic devices, this one takes a bit of getting used to. Like breaking in a coffee machine or a new skillet, it takes some messing with to really understand its particular quarks. And once you "get it," things become easier to work out. What I mean by that is, it took me a few tries to realize that the cleaning solution isn't always welcome. I noticed that using it on my hardwood floors left streaks. But using it in my bathrooms cleaned things up well. Also, on my hardwood, I reduce the water spray to its lowest setting to also limit streaks. On the bathroom floors, I turn it all the way up. It doesn't leave streaks in those places and it just goes to town. As far as cleaning goes, I'm not a dirty or junky person, but the machine wipes deeply enough, dry or wet, to always collect some amount of dirt. I always dry sweep the floors before wet mopping and it surely helps to develop that routine. When pouring in the water, I tilt the device forward in order to fill the whole reservoir. For the bathrooms, I pour in the suggested amount of cleaning fluid. For my hardwoods, I use none. There isn't much push to this thing, but it does get the dirt. No scrubbing and no power to speak of. This is sweeping at its most sweepy. I don't think I mind because, as I said, there is always evidence of its cleaning success left behind. I use disposable as well as all three of the reusable pads. I have only reused a used pad once, because in my opinion, it wasn't very dirty at all. But I do not recommend it. Once a week, I dedicate a cleaning day to the house, and I put all the robots to work. That's three bathrooms and one medium-sized hardwood floor for this Jet. After about 2 bathrooms, the battery is shot and I have to pause everything to recharge. So... The battery is abysmal. I went out and bought the Powtree 3.6V 6000mAh Replacement Li-ion Battery for iRobot Braava Jet as a backup. It is no longer the backup. Immediately, the new battery proved itself to be superior to the IROBOT batt in every way. Don't waste any time - bite the bullet and buy this battery if you're trying to clean more space that just a couple little bathrooms. It's at least triple the power of that little baby thing that came with the Jet. And also, with this device, you must detach the battery to charge it. When it comes to pad usability, I have every kind. I prefer the throwaways because you can see the dirt and know what kind of work the device has done and been doing. But because that's expensive, I lean harder on the keepers for obvious reasons. Most specifically, the Wolfish 6 Packs Washable Mopping Pads for iRobot Braava Jet. As a con, the dry pad is gray for some reason, and you won't know what kind of job the machine did afterwards when searching the pad for dirt. I guess that's no big deal, but the ability to confidence check is surely gone because of the color of the reusable dry pad. They all slide right on and can subsequently pop off just as easily with the flick of the release switch up top. These reusable pads do not detach from the card for easy washing machine cleaning. Some of the ones they have on the market do detach. I bought ones that didn't. It has not been a problem when cleaning - I just throw the whole things in the washer and let them get clean on a low setting. I don't put anything else in there with them. Between my main mop and this one, I could clean 6 pads in one load. Using the app is easy but can be inconvenient. You have to hit the button on the device to wake it up before the app can connect. You also have to name all your devices on the app for reasons. In my case, Alexa needs to know what to call them anyway, so I gave them unique names. I decided to name them after famous media housekeepers like Florence from the "Jeffersons," or "Mrs. Garrett" from "Diff'rent Strokes." This Jet is named Mr. Belvedere. Mr. Belvedere cannot talk to the phone app via wifi, so it has to connect using Bluetooth. You don't have to do anything special here, it will just connect. However, you must be close by. I cannot sit comfortably on the couch downstairs and use the app to tell Mr. Belvedere upstairs to start mopping like I do my M6 called Alice. So, stand near the device when using the app. The app can change various settings such as fluid spray power and it keeps you updated on the battery power. Using the invisible barrier is easy enough but not always reliable. The machine has forgotten about the barrier on every other occasion. To use the barrier, you hard press the button with the rear facing your "invisible barrier." When the two red lines ignite, you're good to go. If it remembers the barrier, that is. At all. Furthermore, the device has failed multiple times at recognizing rugs. I've re-entered a room only to see Mr. Belvedere clumsily fumbling around in the middle of my rug like it hit its head on a rock and wandered in a daze. It's a pathetic sight to behold, really. Go home, Mr. Belvedere - you're drunk! That's a solid...solid star lost. The fact is, once you figure out how to make it work, you can make it work. But unlike the M6, the Jet isn't as dependable. Mine has climbed on top of the rug, making me have to fold the rug every time I want the floor mopped. The battery is lousy and the learning curve is steep enough that you might mess up your hardwood floor if you don't figure out the learning curve quickly enough. It's a solid 3-star device and only has a positive rating because it's literally keeping me from having to do these floors myself. And that's what I'm talking about right there. Okay bye.

Amazing little dude deserves 5 ⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
UPDATE- Sep 12, 2018 I liked it so much that I ordered another one for my cousin. However, when it arrived the battery did not last as long as mine. So we replaced the brava jet (all thanks to Amazon and it’s customer friendly policies). The replacement works just fine. Please note - if your battery doesn’t last 1 and a half hour or more, I think your device is faulty. Also, it should take around an hour for the battery to get charged - if it shows fully charged within 15-20 minutes, again it’s a problem. Time your device and see how long it runs. Ours run for more than 1.5 hours in one go. My cousin and her family love this guy as much as I do :) ———————————- This little thing is one of the best investments I have made. My life has become so easy with this coming in to our home. I have purchased the washable mop that can be used over time (not the disposal ones). First day when I put it on the floor, the mop was the dirtiest. Earlier I used to mop my floor once or twice a week but I didn’t expect it to be so dirty. After few days of using, the mop is getting less dirty but cleaning the floor like a pro. Here’s my observation: PROS: Portability- quite small and can get into tight places where otherwise it’s difficult to get into. Usability- simple and easy to use Reliable- it does what it says -MOPPING!! CONS: I wish it had a longer battery life. It still lasts few hours but I wanted more. The attachable mopping pad is expensive. I just hope it lasts long. In the advertisement, they have mentioned that it should be used in bathrooms or kitchen. I use it in my kitchen, and family room. I barricade the hallway so that the brava jet doesn’t enter the living room and it stays where I want to confine him to. I have no idea what other people have issues with this. I am in love with it. I put it on at night in the kitchen before we go to sleep and my husband charges the battery in the morning when he goes to gym. When he returns, he puts this on the job in our living area. We are in love with this device and are thinking of getting an additional battery so that we could use it for more than 2 places and do not have to wait to charge the battery. I think you should get give it a try and won’t be disappointed. Great great great little dude 👍👍👍👏

Love this
I have used this a couple of times in a smaller half-bath/powder room which has tile flooring. I fully admit I hate cleaning floors so the floor had dust bunnies and hair in the corners. So, I went over it with a stick vacuum and then used the dry pad (which is akin to a dry Swiffer duster) then used the wet cleaning pad. Note, there are three types of pad, wet, damp and dry. All the pads themselves are actually dry. The damp and wet refers to how much water the unit will spray while cleaning. When the damp pad is connected the unit will spray less water than with the wet pad connected. The robot knows which pad is connected based on holes in the pad attachment that slips into the base of the robot. They look like old-school programming punch cards (for those who are old enough to remember what those were) and based on the configuration of the holes, the robot knows how much, if any, water to spray while cleaning. The robot holds 150 mL of water (so just over half a cup), which is strangely not in the documentation provided with the unit but can be found on the iRobot website. Today (Jan 5, 2020) was the second time I used it, just with the wet cleaning pad. The first cleaning, about a week ago took a lot longer, probably 30 minutes with the dry pad, and another 30 with the wet pad. The second time, just using the wet pad took about 15-20 minutes. After the cleaning cycle, the floor was damp, but not extremely wet. So, the pad did a good job getting up most of the water that was sprayed. How clean it will get your floor will largely depend on how clean you had kept it up to the point of using the mop the first time. After the first use with the wet pad, I had to pick up some wet dust/hair clumps that were left on the floor. After the second use, there were almost none of those and the floor was cleaner. So, if you use it once a week or once every two weeks, it seems like it will do a great job keeping the floors clean. Here are some pros and cons I have noticed after the first couple of uses: Pros: 1. It is small and can maneuver around tight spaces. It had no problems getting around the back of the toilet and between the toilet and vanity in a small bathroom. 2. The pads are reasonably priced for replacement disposable pads, and there are washable pads available as well, so it ends up being very cost-efficient. 3. The pads can be ejected after you run it by a slide-type button, so you do not have to touch the pad to get it off the unit. Definitely a plus after cleaning a bathroom. 4. It is very light, even with water in it, and has a handle so you can pick it up without touching the bottom. 5. It has a rechargeable battery. While it does not have a docking station that the unit reconnects to and charges from like the more expensive units do, it does have a battery that pops in and out of the unit and plugs into a charging dock (which itself plugs into a regular wall outlet) to charge. It takes a couple of hours for the battery to charge, and when the robot is connected to the app, it has a battery indicator so you know how full the battery is. Cons: 1. It does not have all the bells and whistles that the higher-priced units have, like a docking station, the ability to schedule times to clean, etc. It does have some "smartness" to it, such as a virtual wall feature that will allow you to set it down and not clean anything behind where the unit starts out, but that is about it. Personally, I just put it toward the back wall of the bathroom and shut the door and do not bother engaging the virtual wall. It will stop cleaning roughly where it started, so if you do not start it in front of the door, you will be able to open the door when it is done without it blocking the door (if the door swings into the room being cleaned). 2. It does not turn off on its own right away after the cleaning cycle stops. It is just a small point, but it would be nice if it just powered down right away after it stops so it does not waste battery power needlessly. If I think of any other pros or cons as I use it, I will update the review. But, so far, after just a couple of uses I really like this, and definitely recommend it, especially if you are not cleaning large areas.

Excellent gadget!
Although small, she does a brilliant job of cleaning floors. I’ve called her ‘Flora’ and she’s a big help with the housework, I can set her off in one part of the house and get on with other things, or set her off overnight, then by the next morning, the floors are clean. She is a little expensive, but compared to the new version by iRobot which can be programmed, it’s much more reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend her.

Keeps CLEAN floors CLEAN between washings.
iRobot Braava Jet 240 My latest foray into the robotic floor-mopping sphere is the lowly little Braava Jet 240 which was released back in March. I waited a while to buy this one, mainly because I already had several working Scoobas I’ve bought over the years that still work like a charm, and I thought I had no need for any more robots. More recently, I tested the Braava series 320, with the water reservoir add-on and a few extra reusable pads. My experience with the 320 was somewhat lacking to say the least. Though I really wanted to love it, problems kept popping up much too often on the 320. Navigation issues would lead to frequent coverage issues, and the Northstar cube just refused to connect 3/4 of the time, no matter what I tried. The older scooba 230 is on its second battery and is beginning to die early, and the 390 doesn’t really like the new thresholds and vents at my new house since I moved and has since become a real pain to use with 100% success. Enter the Braava Jet 240. I first saw this robot when it was released and decided this was one I would sit out. To me, it just seemed much too small to have any effect on dirt… just looking at that that tiny pad it uses. What could that possibly do? When I bough this little guy I was really tossing the dice, hoping it would make up for some of the shortfalls of the other floor washing robots I’ve used. And it did not disappoint. The Jet has a few tricks up its sleeves designed to make life a little easier. Like smarter, cube-free navigation, to the best suspension I’ve seen in any iRobot so far. It also has 3 cleaning modes for use in different situations, with a dry sweeping mode and a water squirting feature that is much more effective than the 320’s wet pad and reservoir (which dried up all the time before the reservoir was even empty) All these features made me really wish I had this model over the 320. So I got on Amazon and ordered one. The box it came in is gorgeous. iRobot has really nailed the unboxing experience here, with their sharp, eye-popping colour graphics and perfect placement of everything in the box, you get the feeling that you’re getting quality. From the instruction booklet to the charger, everything has its place, everything wrapped in perfectly-formed cellophane and surrounded by cardboard cutouts to keep everything tight for shipping. Lifting the cardboard away, we find the shiny white plastic-clad ‘bot accompanied by a lithium battery, wall charger, and samples of all 3 types of pads. Picking the robot up for the first time revealed a hefty, solid-feeling product with a very premium feel for the price. I suspect heavy weights are placed inside for balance. The bot itself is beautifully designed. Nothing is left wanting. I was still leery about the puny pad size, but we’ll soon see if they do the job. I wasted no time and got the battery charging right away. I was happy that it only took a couple hours to get the green light so I could get this thing going. I loved that the battery just pops in by pressing it into the robot, no need for alignment or orientation, it just pops in. Some extra batteries would be nice, but I couldn’t find any at this time. The iRobot website claims that replacement batteries are coming, though when is anyone’s guess. It would add so much convenience to keep working longer with pre-charged batteries, which is a huge advantage over the Scooba 230, which took 7 hours to charge and had to charge on-board. Using the Jet 240 is just stupid-simple and hassle-free compared to past Scoobas. They just couldn’t have made it easier. Simply choose a space roughly 200sf that you want cleaned, place the appropriate cleaning pad on the robot, set the robot on the floor in the bottom left of the area chosen and press Clean. Depending on the pad installed, the robot will read it and adjust its operation for that specific cleaning mode. In wet modes, the whole cleaning head actually vibrates, increasing scrubbing effectiveness. Gone are the days of measuring cleaning solution, cleaning half a dozen dirty robot parts and rescuing the robot from those dreaded vents and thresholds. This unit just works and works wonderfully. What they don't tell you though, is that these floor cleaning robots work best when you start with a thoroughly hand-washed floor, and periodically run your iRobots to maintain the clean. When I tried the Braava Jet on the dirty kitchen floor it left the entire floor cloudy and when I ran the Scooba afterward, the dirty water was filthy. So this robot won't clean up heavily soiled floors, and it's necessary to run a Scooba once a week to do the deep cleaning. After the 200sf was finished, you can set it for another 200sf by creating a virtual wall by holding the Clean button, you can prevent the robot from going back to the area it has already cleaned, and in this way you can cover more and more space with each battery charge. There is no need to expect this robot to clean an entire 800sf area at once, as its cleaning performance does suffer at that square footage, leaving streaks. A quick rinse of the pad between runs and streaks are kept to a minimum, if any at all. What I dislike about this unit is the rare occasion it does get stuck, it completely aborts the mission, and you must restart from scratch. Elation quickly turned to frustration as I watched the bot hang up on the corner of the nastiest vent in the house, only to call it quits. There's a narrow passage beside my bathroom vanity which Braava entered but couldn't escape. The Scooba 230 navigates this area with ease. I was disappointed with the lack of grout-cleaning performance on the bathroom tiles. Neither the reusable washing pad or the disposable washing pad were able to reach into the grout lines at all. I really liked the tough build and high-quality feel of the bot in my hand, the rubber wheels feel nice and grippy, the suspension is incredibly well-designed, and I liked the reusable blue wet pad, with what feels like bristles embedded in the microfibre for more effective scrubbing. I’ve always recommended the Scooba line of robots over the years but this robot solves a lot of the frustrations involved with using those older models. The absurd simplicity and the sensible price make the Braava Jet 240 easy to recommend for anyone looking for their ticket out of one of the worst chores. If you’re thinking about buying one, don’t hesitate… go for it! It’s a great little helper to have around and won’t break the bank.
