It should work exactly the same as turpentine for cleaning paint brushes and as a general solvent.Winsor & Newton (an art supplier) claims that it shouldn't be used to thin oil paints because it can make the paint non-drying and damage the colors, but my personal experience with it doesn't back that up. My painting instructor specifically recommended it by brand name, and he never indicated that it behaved any differently than regular turpentine aside from the smell.If you want it as a reagent for some kind of chemistry experiment, though, it most likely won't behave exactly like turpentine. It should work similarly as an organic solvent if that's all you need, but it may not work if you need a specific compound from turpentine as a reactant.
