No, it should not. The padded section is toward the outside of the pack and it should fold flat without any problem. Also, If your 2nd grader fills this with books, he has too many books. This pack is larger than you would expect.

As of Oct 2017, the product description says the backpack weighs 5lbs 5oz, not 3.5lbs as the previous answer claims.

Depending how full it is, probably could fit.

This is incorrect about the depth. There’s a pocket for a laptop/tablet, plenty of room for books and other items, plus 2 pockets (one quite large, the other somewhat smaller). It is functional, well constructed, easy to use and having wheels is great.
