How often should this filter be replaced?

Open the filter after a month. Check it out. I check the flow when it slows down l clean the hole filter about three months.

What is the diameter of this filter? Can I use it in a 7 inch sump cup?

My pads go into the 2217 canister filter

Do these fit the Ecco line of Eheim canister filters?

I dont think so, these are made for the Classic 2217/600. You would need this: http://www.amazon.com/EHEIM-Filter-Series-Coarse-Filters/dp/B00425FW4S/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1393032334&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=eccopro+Filter
