I want to use this to stream my xbox and switch games. if i have an xbox headset, do i need a separate microphone or can i use the xbox headset?

Please note you can't connect the headset to the controller or game console since it will cut the audio off before it transmits to your streaming software. You can only connect the headset to your computer for streaming.

How is the color on the avermedia live gamer ultra?

Here's a video that alternates between screen tests with the AverMedia GC553 and a $20 capture device called IPXOZO. It was recorded at 2160p and 10bit color depth with xSplit Broadcaster, although I don't know if it will recompress when updated. The 10bit color comes through beautifully on the GC553.

Do you need the software to record in PC Free mode?

Can I use this to go live with a dslr

Yes, you can. But I no longer recommend this product. After recording more than the MicroSD card can hold, the LGP2 has bricked my 64GB and 128GB Micro SD cards. I've tried fixing them thru Mac and Windows to no avail. So if you use this for recording any paid for projects, be aware of this issue.
