Exquisitely illustrated
The illustrations by Kadir Nelson are exquisite, and this historical true story is told in a simple way that children can appreciate.

A stunningly accessible story of slavery for children
A beautifully illustrated, gently told story. This was an excellent way to introduce some of the lesser atrocities of slavery to my 6 year old daughter in a way that she could understand. Would definitely recommend.

Powerful illustrations
What a fantastic book, with the most powerful illustrations! A true story telling the tale of the pain of growing up as a slave. This is a must for any history topic on slavery in Key stage 1 and above. I highly recommend.

Very poor quality version.
Disappointed in the poor quality of this product. The actual book is great, which is why I ordered it, but this version is almost like a photocopied print of an original - very flimsy & low quality. I was especially cross, considering how much Iโd paid for it.
