Why does it say this doesn’t work on 02 wrangler 4.0?

Not sure, but I can tell you it works on a 99 Grand Cherokee 4.0 and an 03 Grand Cherokee 4.0. Not sure what the differences between the wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4.0’s are

This Jeep Fuel Rail kit is meant for any Jeep with a 4.0L inline 6 cylinder engine, '97 - '04. This will also work for mater model 4.0L inline 6cyl engine with some modification to the fuel rail sleeve.

Is there any reason why this shield/kit would not fit a 1996 Cherokee XJ 4.0?

If the intakes and fuel rail look the same, it'll likely fit.. There have been small changes in the intake manifold over the years that could make the flat shield not fit..

Will this fit an 82 cj7 4.2 that has mopar mpi installed? it is based on the wrangler 4.0 mpi set up.

Can’t speak specifically to that motor, but this set fits the 99-03 4.0 in the Grand Cherokee for sure and I’m sure the same years of Wrangler.
