Raw
Most people will find the author’s writing style odd but for me it is perfect as it portrays the raw emotions and interactions between characters. The story is simple but its incredibly heartbreaking.

It was good but I wouldnt read it again
So many emotions about this book. At some point, I never wanted to put it down. They're just two normal people who were obviously in love and completed each other, but they both had their own demons and needed saving. I loved how it was narrated and how the characters were so normal, yet still peculiar in their own ways. I must admit, I was expecting a happy ending, but some stories are meant to be left open. Was the relationship complicated? I think they just cared too much for one another.

Hmmm?
I enjoyed this book and the dynamics of modern relationships and how the shadow of abusive households linger throughout our lives , the characters are well written . However I didn’t fall in love with this book and am not sure on the global hype around this. It’s a better than average read for me!

Now I understand why it is so hyped!
Book review: Normal People by Sally Rooney "Life is a thing you bring with you inside your own head." Connell comes from a working class family, quite famous at his high school and is much loved by his friends. Whereas, Marianne belonging to an upper class family, is a loner and much hated. They both seem distant at school, but when they meet after school hours, they are completely different people. What seems to be a purely sexual relationship soon turns platonic. Over a period of time, sometimes together, sometimes far apart, we see Connell and Marianne finding solace in each other's company despite of multiple challenges they both face. Read this book for its- 1. Writing: Different timelines for each chapter, yet the way she has written this book, nothing seems amiss. The chapter starts in the present, but comes full circle, keeping us in the loop with the whole story. 2. Characters: Yes, Connell and Marianne are unbelievably frustrating at times, especially when it comes to their relationship with each other, but that makes them even more relatable and real. You can't help but root for them, even though you might've never been in the same shoes. 3. Plot: Rooney has captured the complexities of every relationship beautifully. I know, sometimes their relationship seemed too dramatic, yet time and again, she has given us the whole picture as to why they are-the way they are! 4. Ending: "All these years, they've been like two little plants sharing the same plot of soil, growing around one another, contorting to make room, taking certainly unlikely positions." This might seem like a story of two messed up people, complicating their lives with sex rather than acknowledging what they mean to each other. But I love how their stories come together in the end, how their bond is stronger than ever and how much they've changed each other, along with supporting one another. My only concern was Marianne's dynamics with her family, I wish it was explored more. I am so glad I read this one despite of all the mixed reviews that I came across. I get the hype for this one, positive or negative, this book definitely grabs your attention! 5🌟

Beautiful and heart-breaking
I have given Normal People by Sally Rooney five out of five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I am beyond happy that I picked this book to be my first read of 2021. Having watched the TV series adaptation on BBC in 2020 and hearing very good things about this book, I tried not to get too hyped whilst reading it. However, after a few pages in, I fell in love. Part of me wishes I had read the book first as it explains some of the parts from the TV series adaptation that I had gotten a little confused about, however I will most definitely be re-watching the adaptation now that I have finished the book as I want to re-live Connell and Marianne’s relationship visually for the second time. Sally Rooney’s dual narrative in third person was perfect for Connell and Marianne’s story; her writing is simply beautiful and raw. There isn’t a real dialogue in this book when people talk with one another which I thought was going to be difficult to follow, but after a few scenes I managed to pick it up easily. I found myself on an emotional rollercoaster whilst reading this book cover to cover, it was so beautiful and yet eternally heart-breaking. There is a specific quote from The Perks of Being a Wallflower which came to mind when thinking about Marianne’s relationships and how she allows others to treat her. The quote is: “We accept the love we think we deserve”. Which is such a sad yet powerful quote and I believe she does exactly that. She doesn’t think of herself as much and believes she’s not worthy so she allows herself to be abused and punished by her relationships. One of my favourite quotes which jumped out at me in Normal People was: “Most people go through their whole lives, Marianne thought, without ever really feeling that close with anyone.” What Connell and Marianne shared was a love so special and one that I will remember for a very long time. I really loved reading the dynamic evolve between Connell and Marianne. I thought it was so beautiful and Rooney captured the narrative so perfectly for this book. Another quote which really stood out to me was: “She is an abyss, that he can reach into, an empty space for him to fill.”. I cannot wait to read Conversations with Friends and other books written by Sally Rooney. I don’t think this book will be for everyone although, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a raw and natural adult romance however, there are trigger warnings for abuse and mental health and it covers suicide in this book as well.
