A Great Item to Have in Your Tool Set. DIY or Pro. Very Good Build Quality at a Great Price.
Porter Cable Heat Gun PC1500HG This is a great heat gun for the price. I was originally considering one of the 2 DeWalt models but read many mixed reviews on them, plus the cheaper DeWalt was twice the price of this Porter Cable. I needed this for drying drywall mud patches, paint touchups and occasional heat shrinking tubing. This one seemed like it would fit the bill and for $30 it was much less expensive. I did on first use turn it on at low speed, then high. Next I gradually adjusted the temperature dial up to max over a period of a couple of minutes and let it run on high/max for several minutes. I would recommend that you do this outside because you can smell the fumes of heated up plastic and paint. It is kind of like when you get a new oven and run it for the first time. I then turned down the temperature dial and let is run to cool down for a minute. If you are going to be using it indoors in a non-vented area, I would do this several times to get most all of the new break-in smell out. Also I think it will last longer if you turn it down to low temperature and let it cool before turning it off after every high temperature use. Speaking of which, I wish it had another button on the side that turned the heating elements on/off separately from the fan speed. That way you could turn on the fan, adjust the temperature and then kick on the heat when you needed it. You could also easily cool it down without always having to turn the temp dial. The dial is a bit low profile and not especially easy to turn. I wish it had better grip to it. I may coat it with some rubber handle dip for tools that I have sitting on my shelf when I get a moment. As far as build quality goes, this seems very well made. I like the ergonomics and in-hand feel. It is comfortable to use for extended periods of time. It is much quieter than most hair driers. It does not have nearly as much air flow either. I would say that the Hi speed setting on this is like the low speed setting on most hair driers. Which to me is a good thing and probably necessary tot keep the air hot. Don’t try to dry your hair with this, it can easily burn your hand if held close up in the airflow. It is suppose to output between 110 F to 1100 F one inch from the nozzle. Another feature I really like is the cord. It is thick, yet flexible and of high quality. It has a nice good solid rubber feel to it. No shinny hard plastic coating hear. It probably is a heat resistant part silicone coated cord, or maybe not. But it does unfold and straightens well. I know I have paid $15 for a good saw cord. To have a good one on a $30 heat gun is a very nice touch. I will definitely be purchasing some nozzle attachments in the future. To be able to heat shrink without having to work it around all sides of the tubing would be nice. I know the U-shaped attachment will allow you to heat shrink in place. That is a must if applying heat shrink to wires that are in a compartment or box where you couldn’t get around to all sides of the tubing. The polyolefin tubing that I usually use activates at 194 F, so this is more than adequate for it. This works great for speeding up the drying of mud and paint. Just use a low temp setting and keep in mind that thick patches will have a lot of water thru out the depth of the patch. As the top dries it will become wet again as moisture from the middle migrates out. I would apply and dry in thin layers to build it out. That seems to be the fastest approach. If you apply paint over a dried surface but still wet interior of a mud patch, more than likely you will find cracked and peeling paint the next day as the moisture in the mud has migrated out. You will then need to sand, mud and re-paint! Anyways, this is a wonderful heat gun. I’m glad that I purchased it. It has a one year warranty. I hope it will last many more than that. At $30 however I guess I couldn’t complain too much even if it only lasted a few. A great item to have in your tool set, DIY or Pro. I’m going to give this one 5 stars.

Strips Paint off Old houses with ease
I debated the few choices of heat gun and decided you can never go wrong with Porter-Cable. I was not disappointed. I got a variable temperature control. An added bonus was the ability to place the gun in an upright position and it will stay that way. It is fairly balanced so it won't tip over too easily. As is the nature of heat guns, it takes almost a minute to develop fully operating temperature but is good to go after that, so keep it running if you have a long section to strip. I've used this Heatgun to strip paint off a 50 year old house, I've noticed at least 4 layer of paint this gun handled it no problem it bubbles the paint making it easier to scrap away, Strips the paint on the wood trim and on the concrete block portion of the house with ease. Very durable i've had the gun on for 2-3 hours straight while stripping paint and outside of the metal nozzle it is cool to the touch, you would think after running so long it would heat up the whole gun, but it doesn't. Great gun at a great price and makes a hard job of stripping paint easier.

Bigger than it looks in the picture, but not unwieldy
It was one of those things that I bought, without any real reason to buy it. I'm a crafty person, so I bought it as an investment, and for the price, I couldn't say no. The one thing that was frightening me with most of the options I found on Amazon were that they only offered 2 settings and that's it. For something that can exceed 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, I wanted something that wouldn't break the bank and gave me some control over the temperature. This fit the bill and was a great price too. Pros: ------- -Feels like it's built well, has a nice weight -Love that you can set it down on it's back or on it's side without fear of the hot metal touching the surface or the vent holes. -The fact (as I mentioned in the intro) that at this price point that there is a dial to control the temperature. I don't know why this is such a hard to find feature on these things, even at higher price points, it's not when you start looking at the $75 and up, that they start featuring dials or digital options. -Thick cord, but oddly flexible, so you're not constantly trying to fight the cord when working. Cons (more like personal annoyances): -------------------------------------------------------- -Totally personal, I just thought it was going to be smaller, this thing is kind of big. The barrel is about 10" long (3" D at base) and that does include the metal tip. Normally not a problem, but I live in a tiny condo, so any space I can hold on to is precious. The basic dimensions are as follows , the Barrel is 10" long, and the 3" Diameter max. The handle is 6" long and 2.5" max (by the "trigger"). -The cord is thicker than I thought it would be, think thicker than an orange extension cord, again this ties into meaning that it takes more space to store it, in a place that is already limited in that department. The sheath that protrudes from the handle is also on the long side, too, so it gets tricky trying to wrap up the cable, when storing it. Notes: The dial on mine had 16 bumps between min and max, so it's kind of easy to estimate the temperature. The low setting's range is 120 - 900 degrees Fahrenheit, and on high the range is 130 - 1100. Decent device, and great price. Not many can offer as many features as this has, especially at this price.

Has a dial that goes from room temperature to very hot, and everything in between. You can even turn the dial down so much that you can dry your boots without melting anything. It gets hot enough to melt vinyl, but I haven't tried welding with it (would need a nozzle for that). The build feels good and solid. This is the epitome of heat guns. I used and abused one just like this (different brand, but otherwise exactly the same) at work, so wanted to buy one for myself. I don't know why anybody would regret getting this one over some other model. I know I don't.

Bought to remove old tape from golf clubs during regripping... after removing the grip, only takes a couple minutes of heat application to pull off all the old tape and residue very easily. Temperature can get very very hot on full. Easy to regulate. Excited to use for other projects. I should have bought this a long time ago!
