Simple solution for basic printing via WIFI
I have a simple single function low cost printer. I don't need an All-in-one function printer and I don't need to print from a smart phone or tablet. I use a Dell laptop running Windows 7 with WIFI via a N300 Netgear WIFI router. I also have a single function HP Deskjet 1000 printer without any WIFI. I don't print much but I wanted a way to print without physically attaching my printer to my laptop. This product solved that problem. Basically you plug the print server into your router and plug your printer into the print server usb port. When you load the software on the laptop you are installing a second HP driver for your printer. Your original HP Deskjet driver remains and is an option if you decide want to go back to printing through your local usb port on your laptop. The new driver formats the print job to be sent over the network either via the laptop ethernet interface or via WIFI. It works very well. All I need to do is turn my printer on and I can print from my laptop while working in another room. The only complaint is that the StarTech Quick Start guide Software Installation instructions are a bit lacking (at least for Windows 7). Connect your laptop to your router. The basic install goes as follows: 1. Insert the CD. AutoPlay opens and shows a "Run Setup.exe" option (not Networking Printer Wizard). 2. You click the Setup option and it runs a StarTech "Networking Printer Wizard" that puts a "Launch Network Printer Wizard" icon (shortcut) on your desktop. 3. You click on that Launch ... icon and it opens the Windows "Network Printer Wizard". In that window you'll see your shared network printer listed. In my case it was HP Deskjet 1000 J110 series-P05d065f6a. That is the new print driver you are installing. Highlight it and complete the steps. 4. When you print, your HP dialog box will show printer selection options (both the original and network printer). You'll have to select the network printer each time or you can make it your default printer. Go to Ctl Panel-->Hardware&Sound-->View devices&printers: Right clk the network printer and select Default. StarTech.com should be able to tell you if your particular printer is supported.

Don't waste your money
I bought the ethernet-only device because I wanted it as foolproof as possible. It just doesn't work. I tried many troubleshooting tactics. One time it showed up on my computer, but then the printer wouldn't print anything I sent to it. No support for mobile devices either. I ended up installing CUPS on a raspberry pi and that's working perfectly from both my computer and my phone.

Manufacturer's Tech Support Has Your Back!
I consider myself pretty tech-savvy, but this print server still took me about an hour of troubleshooting before I gave up and reached out for help. The setup isn’t exactly beginner-friendly — but the customer support absolutely makes up for it. I went to the manufacturer’s website on Thanksgiving (of all days!) and was surprised to find live chat available. I clicked, hoping someone might actually be there, and sure enough a support rep answered immediately. He helped fix the settings, and everything is working perfectly now. So even if you’re not technically inclined, this print server is a great way to share your printer over the network — and you can count on the manufacturer’s tech support to back you up all the way.

Works Perfectly with DYMO LabelWriter 450 Turbo & Twin Turbo
I tested this print server with my DYMO LabelWriter 450 Turbo and Twin Turbo, and it works flawlessly! But, the setup wasn't completely plug-and-play. The device didn't automatically recognize the printer or its drivers, so I had to install the DYMO driver package manually. To get it working, I selected custom settings, set the queue name to LPR1, and that was it—worked just like connected via USB. This is a great way to use the Dymo 450 series on a server without having to upgrade to the 550 series.

Easy connectivity, really good customer support, going to end up replacing the printer
I did have connectivity issues to start and after trying on a secondary router that I use for testing purposes, it was fine--- found my problem on my network and the unit was discovered immediately...not the fault of the unit, was a problem with my network. I ended up having to return it as no matter what I did on two systems, my printer (an HP printer on the list) would begin to print out page after page of gibberish---- tried to figure out what was going on and even was in contact with tech support... although they were very nice and overall helpful, my problem still persisted. In the end I wish it did work, but on the other hand it is my last printer that I own that does not have baked in wireless/ wired network connections. So with that, I am going to replace the printer when the toner runs out and move onto something new. Not necessarily bad, but it does in a matter of words suck to have to give up an overall solid printer. The main reason that I decided to do this was that I print from three different systems and with the printer tied to one system, print speeds are slow. On the system that the printer is connected via USB.... all works normal, but for anyone else... it is painfully slow.... about 2-3ppm from about 40ppm that it does do on the connected system. Again, I wish it worked for me, but in the end a new printer will be on order.

Works fine, but may have issues with MAC OS
The device was easy to install and set up, and my printer (Brother L2300 series) was easy to set up as a Bonjour printer, but the Mac would print one document just fine, then spend minutes "looking for printer" on other occasions. This seems to be a longstanding Mac OS problem, which has afflicted other users of networked printers. If you run into this issue, the solution is to not use Bonjour, but rather set up the printer as an IP printer (set the IP address as a static address; the MAC address of the server is on the device's label.) Took me a while to figure this out, but now the printer works as smoothly as if it was on a USB cable.

Way too much trouble to get configured and failure came quickly.
Update 4/29/2017 - After having a similar situation of a constantly dropped connection with a TP-LINK server, I purchased a Raspberry Pi 3 from Amazon and configured it to be a print server. It has been a solid performer for 5 days now and has never lost connection. You may want to consider a similar path if you want a reliable print server. I have a HP LaserJet 1200 which does not show up on a lot of lists, but the Pi with CUPS printing system and the HP module works just fine for my printer. It takes a bit more work, but considering all the time I spent trying to get this unit to work, I would say it is about equal. Update 4/12/2017 - I really liked this server; very small size and it did not get hot. As noted below it was a horror show to get it configured correctly, but it did work. (This is the only hardware item that I can ever remember having to contact Tech Support for help.) The problem is that it only worked for about 12 hours. Then I had to unplug it and plug it in again to get it to work. That happened about three times in 12 hours. I even thought it might be my power-saving switch so I connected it directly to my router and it still does not work. I know it is there because it responds when I ping it. Whatever is going on now, the printed page just goes to the ether. No more failed to print messages. Just nothing. When you look in the print queue window there is nothing. So, I am returning this and would suggest that you look elsewhere for a print server. I really wanted to like this thing, I really really did. Original Review: OK. I am giving this print server a 5-star rating based on their customer service, not anything that is in the documentation or on their website. I spent way too much time trying to get this to work before I finally called Customer Service. But, when it works it works great and that is what you want! I have Windows 10 and an old HP 1200 LaserJet printer; not necessarily the best combination. But, I like Windows 10 and the printer still works so I want to keep it. First and foremost, this device seems to ONLY work in LPR mode. I had a Linksys print server that just died and configuring it to TCP/IP raw was a piece of cake. So, stupid me, I thought how difficult can it be. So, I changed the DHCP to a static number and setup the printer to use this address in RAW format. (This is standard setup for just about every other print server on the market.) It will not work with this unit. So, if you get this unit do not take out the CD that comes with it. First, go to Control Panel/Programs and Features, click on “Turn Windows features on or off”, then find the LPR Port Monitor entry and click the box next to it to turn on LPR printing. Click OK to save your setting. If you have the printer in your printer list find out what drivers and connections you have and delete them. Next, go to the StarTech.com website support and download the latest software. One of the entries is labeled Network Printer Wizard Setup 2017 with Windows 8. Use this one to get the drivers setup correctly. It should also set the printer up as well. I had tried so many times and removed the HP printer without removing the corresponding LPR port that the software did not generate the full printer entry. If you do not get the printer "icon" for your printer I would suggest that you call tech service rather than try things on your own. All the documentation you find online about how to configure a network print driver will not work with this one. I would strongly suspect the uniqueness of this unit is why there are so many unfavorable reviews on this product. It is quirky. But, when you get the proper configuration in place it works great.
