Life Among the Ruins

I'll cut to the chase: this is the best AOR album ever recorded, and AOR fans don't even know it exists.Yes, really. It's Whitesnake-style melodic metal, and believe it or not it's better than the legendary albums of Journey, Foreigner, Michael Bolton, G n R, and any of the rest of the eighties spadex jockeys you'd care to name.It is obscure only because it is by one of the two or three best true metal bands ever, and their fans hate this style of music. It fell through the cracks because it has been mischaracterized as a true metal album. The people who would like it, can't find it and don't know about it.I am that rare bird, a true/power/symphonic metal (or whatever they call it these days) guy who has a soft spot for the lighter stuff. So I can appreciate this one for what it is. What it is, is a miracle: the incomparable compositional and lyrical skills of the singular genius David DeFais applied to the relatively simplistic genre of melodic hard rock.And he, and the band, just nail it. True metal they may be, but for the duration of this delicious concoction of melodic goodness and cocky riffs they somehow cut to the core of that inner dynamic that that characterizes this subgenre, an indescribable combination of raunch and sensitivity. It just feels so right. The song quality never lets up - it's like a greatest hits album. This album would have ruled 1989; but it was released in 1994. Those are the breaks. (I'm actually glad it worked out that way, because I love VS's later albums and if they had gotten the success this album deserved in the financial sense, the later albums might never have appeared.)Metal fan, go get any VS album after the first two, except this one; they are all masterpieces of true metal. AOR fan, welcome to heaven: you just found the Hope diamond in an abandoned coal mine. Get it, play it, keep it forever.

Awesome CDs

This album is Melodic Hard Rock, a little different what they usually did, but it's worth giving it a listening. Not their best album, but good to complete the collection. A different point of view.

Ich bin ein Sammler und dieser Silberling fehlte mir auch wie einige andere der Band. Leider werde ich mit dem Album nicht warm mehrmals habe ich es gehört die Trendmarks sind noch nicht so da wie ich es von Invictus oder den Mirrage Doppelpack oder dem Atreus Doppelpack liebgewonnen habe. Auch Nobel Savage oder Age of Consent oder Visions gefallen mir deutlich besser. Es ist jetzt kein totaler Reinfall David De Feis singt gut nur bei mir fehlen einfach die Hymnen. Eventuell wird es ein Album welches nach Jahren doch noch so seinen Charme entwickelt bis jetzt leider nicht.

Se influenze hard rock erano innegabilmente presenti nei primi lavori della band, a bene cinque anni di distanza dal controverso "Age Of Consent" l'ispirazione a Whitesnake e Led Zeppelin prende il sopravvento ed emerge prepotentemente in "Life Among The Ruins". Scelta consapevole volta ad omaggiare gli idoli di gioventù con risultati egregi ma spiazzanti per chi si aspettava un album più heavy ed epico. DeFeis (in modalità Coverdale) e Eddie "Jimmy Page" Pursino dimostrano così di essere due artisti istrionici e un po' incoscienti vista la scelta stilistica decisamente "fuori moda" nel 1993 (maledetti Nirvana!). Di fatto "Life Among The Ruins" per quanto ispirato resterà un caso isolato nella discografia della band.In questa ennesima riedizione troverete un ricco Cd bonus intitolato "My Mourning Clothes" con alcune inedite cover registrate per l'occasione di T-Rex, Rolling Stones e Led Zeppelin tra gli altri, un paio di brani nuovi ed una serie di superflue versioni alternative e acustiche di vari brani dell'album stesso, il tutto ben impacchettato in Digipak, con un bel libretto con testi e note di DeFeis.

Dieses Album wird den geneigten Hörer - fast - von der ersten - aber mit Sicherheit bis zur letzten Minute faszinieren.Es bieten den von David DeFeis gewohnten epischen Metal, gespickt mit allerlei begnadeten Riffs, genialen Texten sowie allerlei Spielereien drumherum. Jedes der dargebotenen Lieder steht für sich und bildet hier ausnahmsweise keine zusammenhängende Geschichte. Trotzdem ist es sehr homogen und auf dieser hier bewerteten alten Version ist der Sound äusserst kraftvoll und voluminös. Textlich geht es viel um Liebe, Sex und die Frau im besonderen. Herrliche Passagen voller wunderbarer Worte sind das Ergebnis der imensen Schaffenskraft ihres Masterminds David DeFeis, dem ich an dieser Stelle nur ewiges Leben wünschen möchte, oder dass er mich zumindest überdauert, so dass ich in meinem Leben ihn nicht mehr vermissen muss! Five Stars!!!

Buenísima edición en doble digipack de un olvidado disco de la genuina banda americana Virgin Steele. El sonido está remasterizado lo que hace que las canciones se oigan mejor que nunca ya que el líder de la banda suele supervisar paso a paso todas las reediciones del grupo. Canciones como Love Is Pain o Crown Of Thorn son imprescindibles para todo fan de la banda de true epic heavy metal.Respecto al libreto está repleto de fotos, contiene las letras de todas las canciones y un texto muy completo del propio David Defeis comentando canción por canción. Gran compra.

1 solo cd pero viene muy completo con bastante temas extras. Trae librero con fotos. Sonido muy bueno.

Wie anfangen, wenn sich im Nachhinein dieses Album im Reigen der anderen Alben nicht richtig einordnen lässt. Nach 665 Durchläufen lässt sich resumieren: Dieser Release ist unausweichlich mit Virgin Steele verbunden, warum??Er hält bekannte Trademarks bereit aber ist auch anders. Mittlerweile einer meiner Lieblingsalben der Band, der Re- release lässt durch für die Band gewagtes Zusatzmaterial aufhorchen der sicherlich nicht Metal -Jedermanns Gefallen findet,aber Davids Stimme ist wie Immer einfach Klasse!!!! Wann kommt der nächste Streich Hr. Defeis... Unbedingt zulegen gerade deswegen!!!!!
