X-ACTO Pencil Sharpener
This is a great pencil sharpener - the best I've ever used! Sharpens quickly and cleanly. More expensive than some other sharpener, but worth it. Most highly recommended!

A great buy for homeschool families
This was a great addition for our home school area. It sharpens easily, works well, is easy to clean, and the grips on the bottom hold it in place. I feel comfortable allowing my children to use it. My only con is that the tray that holds the shavings seems to jostle and pop out easily, and it will not sharpen unless the tray is inserted fully. It’s a great safety feature, but can get annoying when you have to push it back in constantly.

I love this sharpener!
It's a big boy, so if you have a small work space maybe have it off to the side somewhere. I keep mine off the corner of the mantlepiece by the fireplace near my desk. It does make noise. My family members joked that it takes them back to the classroom every time I use it. But it does handle most pencils, minus the Derwent Inktense. Mainly because they're a different core than watercolor or regular colored pencils being ink based. But it gets the pencils I have (Prismacolor, Holbein, Derwent Procolour, Derwent Coloursoft, and Polychromos) to a nice lethal sharp point when my handhelds fail me. I also experience less breakage on my Prismacolors when I use them with this sharpener as opposed to my handhelds. It works great with my regular drawing pencils as well. I use it to sharpen my Prismacolor Turquoise, FaberCastell Matte, and my Faber Castell 9000 drawing pencils just fine. It's so satisfying getting the sharp, long points with this machine every time. If I don't get it then it's user error, and I have to go again. Usually just a few turns of the pencil left to right for 5 seconds will do the trick. The only pencils I wouldn't use with this is the Derwent Inktense and any pastel pencils you might have simply because they're different mediums entirely from regular colored pencils and drawing pencils. Overall a nice sharpener if you can get it on sale! Would definitely recommend this to any colored pencil artist, or someone who simply uses a lot of pencils in general.

Quickly sharpens, without twisting, and big bin!
Twenty years ago, just as my children began to write, I bought an old school sharpener - you know the one! That old workhorse of a sharpener found just inside the door of every classroom from K-12! I hung it in the laundry room, and had a metal waste basket below it. It felt very much like the right way to begin the process of educating my little people! I am that mom that tried to have all the right tools & bought out the office supply store each fall. There are two items I never had to replace… my huge hallway bulletin board & my manual workhorse of a pencil sharpener! I loved the way that you could feel the pencil being sharpened just right… it took me a helluva long time to perfect my technique, and there was nothing quite as satisfying as getting the point just right! Even as a self-described expert, many times I would get distracted and not turn my pencil every few rotations and I would end up with one side of the pencil with a ridiculously long, half exposed, point that would break if you tried to even it out. I might get that perfect point on my first go, but I could just as easily end up with a stump of a pencil before it finally was usable. And don’t even get me started on the pencil shavings!! I have never figured out how to keep the area around the sharpener clean. I don’t care how careful or diligent you are when emptying that pencil sharpener… It’s a unique kind of mess that makes its way out of the holes and seems even when it’s empty! And the mess it makes if you accidentally bump it, or if your child decides to empty it for you!!! If you use the old standard for the classroom, there is no getting around the mess. Still, though, even with all the headache of using perfect technique the pencil debris, it It was worth it. I felt confident it would last forever & no matter what my kids tried to sharpen. It has performed 19+ years, and still going strong! My main requirement was to have a sharpener that would be reliable and was mounted so it could not get moved or lost! Recently, though, I went to sharpen a pencil & there where my sharpener was screwed to the wall was nothing except four empty screw holes. I stood with my dull pencil wondering whether it was the kids or my husband that decided to rob me of my pencil sharpener, and destabilize my life!! In that moment, I decided to indulge in a grown-up sharpener! I searched all the reviews and narrowed my choices down to a small group, and finally decided on the plug in X-acto “School Pro” model. I am very change adverse… so, even though I was going with electric I still wanted something that was meant to last! I also wanted something that could sharpen various sizes, and was pleased to find an electric sharpener that also did the triangular shaped barrel often used by small children or in construction.to be able to sharpen various sized pencils. My experience with this sharpener has far exceeded my previous experiences with automatic sharpeners. Up until now, I avoided buying an electric sharpener, because the ones I have used are finicky, had to push the pencil in hard, and often made the sharpened point easy to break when writing. I tend to write with enough pressure to make an impression through several pages. The main thing that I thought the old school model would be better for was the length and shape of the sharpened point of the pencil. Even though you had to be skilled at customizing the writing point, when you did get it just right, the point did not break easily and it would write for a long time without needing to be re-sharpened every few paragraphs. I was very happy to be wrong! I have been using this electric sharpener for a few months and the writing point is as near perfect. I might need to knock off the very tip, but it’s easier than getting your ball-point pen to start to write. Given the ease of used, and the ample (way less messy) catch bin… I am loving my new sharpener!! Also, it will not sharpen if the bin is not fully locked in place, and I appreciate that. I do put my hand on the back end to stabilize the sharpener and keep it from scooting back. I do not need to push the pencil in hard, you can easily feed the pencil in and you don’t need to turn it or keep pulling it out and pushing it back in. I don’t believe a toddler has long enough fingers to trigger the motor, but if you have young children around, maybe remove the bin when not in use to be extra cautious. I can’t speak to how well it would hold up against all the stuff my kids tried to sharpen on my trusty workhorse, but for use on regular use by teens/adults on pencils (different thickness, colored, and triangular shaped.) I recommend it, especially as an affordable upgrade to your household sharpener, for the ease of use, versatility, and easy cleanup! If I had known about this product twenty years ago, I would have bought it instead of my old standby. It is large enough to not be carted off, and even if the motor only last a few years, when considering cost vs. constant mess of old one… I absolutely would be willing to take that chance, and save myself the headache. However, manual sharpening uses no electricity and that, coupled with the fact that they have proven themselves as practically indestructible, are strong enough points to make the choice difficult!.

Great sharpener, unsecured shavings cup.
This is a great and reliable sharpener, however the suction pods on the bottom do not stick to the surface, causing the sharpener to move backward and the shaving cup to slide forward. The cup does not snap in place, resulting in having to hold the cup in place while sharpening. Tape would probably help. The sharpener is difficult to clean out if shavings get compacted. Still, I prefer this over other kinds I’ve used because it is so easy to use and is Despite its relatively high price, I prefer this over other types I’ve used because it’s easy to use and sharpens well.

Do not sharpen art pencils in this!
After my hand-cranked Korean-made heavy-duty pencil sharpener breathed its last in 2022 (bought in 2005), it was time for a new one. This time I went electric and went with this one. This thing is terrific at sharpening normal pencils, and even regular color pencils. But one time, 5 months later, I decided to sharpen an expensive art color pencil—which looked, worked, and felt like a color pencil—but made of higher quality materials, sharpened it well, and otherwise just a normal day. However, when I needed to sharpen a regular pencil after that, it stopped working and simply would not run anymore. The blades were not gummed up, and nothing was jammed. But X-Acto absolutely stands by their 10 year warranty and sent out a new one. I only sharpen normal pencils on this thing, and it’s been great since. Since it holds a lot of pencil shavings as well, you only have to empty it very infrequently. I’m impressed with how well they sharpen, and more impressed with X-Acto’s warranty and superb customer service. Just buy it. You’ll have something solid for 10 years—just don’t attempt to sharpen anything exotic in it.

THE BEST SHARPENER MONEY CAN BUY
This is my all time favorite sharpener. A classroom must. It is a great weight and has suction cups to keep its place on the counter. The sharpener its self works great and can adjust for different size utensils. I had two in my classroom. One for regular pencils and one for colored pencils. I had no issues with either. Unfortunately a student did break it one year by shoving a pencil in very hard, but I stand by this sharpener and rebought the same one! This is the best and definitely work the money. I would recommend this as a teacher must or for a great teacher appreciation gift!

Happy with my purchase
This pencil sharpener is amazing. Someone at school told me that this type of sharpener was very expensive, around $300, so I never even looked into buying one. After struggling with regular sharpeners and watching my students use small manual ones, I decided to see if I could find something smaller and more affordable. I checked Amazon and was surprised by how much cheaper it was than I expected. I ordered it, set it up in my classroom, and it has been a great experience. My students even told me it was time for me to upgrade! The quality is excellent— in just two seconds, the pencil is perfectly sharpened. I no longer spend half an hour sharpening 40 pencils for my class. It also has four sturdy rubber grips on the bottom, so it stays in place and doesn’t move while sharpening. I’m very happy with this purchase.

This thing is pretty big!
It arrives, it was plug and play, and it does sharpen pencils very quickly. It has a lot more powerful motor than my older pencil sharpener: the screw cutter spins a lot faster and the pencil is sharp within a second or two. The sharpener itself is also a lot bigger: I was hoping to put this discretely on my desk, but there is nothing discrete about a giant pencil sharpener that dwarfs most other things on my desk. Not on my desk then. For $50 this is still a pretty basic pencil sharpener: some of the similarly-priced ones will stop automatically when the pencil reaches certain sharpness, but this one doesn't and will eat your pencil if you don't pay attention. Another thing is what usually happens to electric pencil sharpeners is that they rely on multiple switches and switch-activated pressure plates to function: those switches tend to break (physically disintegrate) long before the actual cutters wear out. Time will tell if this happens to this unit as well, but it has even more switches and pressure plates than my old sharpener. I get it, most of these are safeties, and replacing a nonfunctioning unit is a lot cheaper than the lawsuit after a unit hurts someone. I would still rather have something that is repairable at least, and this one isn't.

Not for the UK
Not suitable for use in the UK. Exploded on first use. Bit of a nightmare to return - got billed £50 for returning to USA. All got sorted out in the end, but would not recommend.

Not suitable for the UK
It’s not suitable for the UK electricity network : it burned out as soon as we plugged it into socket. But Amazon refunded us without any problem.
