Toddler really enjoys it, and well built.
One thing to note: I purchased this on a 40% off sale. (about $25). For that price, this is worth it. At 35-40, I think this is over priced. $30 seems like a fair price, but $25 really is more appropriate in my opinion. The toy itself is great. My child loves it. It makes a starting and stopping noise when turned on/off. It then makes moderately realistic "chugging" sounds for about 30 seconds. Then those sounds stop, but the engine keeps going for another 4-5 minutes. It will run for about 4-5 minutes or so then turns off, so it doesn't just run until the battery dies. The remote is an Infrared remote, it has to point at the engine to work. Though he doesn't use it, I will sit across the room (about 10-12 feet/ 3-4 meters) and start it up sometimes. We are using it with wooden tracks from Ikea, and it works great. It is about twice as large as the Ikea cars, but the magnetic connections work fine. It is too tall to go under the bridge that comes with the Ikea set, it's about a centimeter too tall to fit cleanly. My child is too young to use the remote, he just isn't interested in it right now. (He was 1 1/2 when I bought it). Eventually it will interest him, so I figured I would get the remote version. The three yellow buttons on top work perfectly for his needs. (forward, stop, and back)You're Though it fits on the Ikea tracks, he normally ends up running it on the floor. On tile, wood, and short pile rugs it works perfectly. A thicker, or loose carpet would bog it down. It's fairly strong, on a tile floor it can easily pull more than a dozen and half of the Ikea cars, assuming the batteries are not too worn out. I've found that rechargables, like the Eneloops, work better, they have better energy densities and provide more power. But, standard AAs work fine also. The battery door is held on with a screw, so children can't open it and get to the batteries. The batteries lasted longer than I thought they would, probably giving 10-12 hours of run time before they became too weak to work well. The rechargables were longer. It's well built, and has suffered many drops onto hard tile without any damage.

Fantastic train car for a 2
Fantastic train car for a 2.5 year and older child (my child got this for 3rd birthday). My child LOVES being able to control it both on the train and from a distance using the controller. Having the ability to make choices at this age is so important and this r/c train really helps with this. We found that each time we start playing with it we first need to hit the center button on the train to “wake it up” and allow it to connect with the remote control. We have been using it for hours a day over this past week and the batteries have lasted well and we have not had to change them yet. Two cons, which could be big ones for your child: 1) this train does not always handle gaps in tracks or hills very well. I believe this is because the back tires are not as well-threaded or thickly-lined with rubber as other battery-powered trains we own so it gets stuck when going up hills and in spots on tracks with gaps. Be sure to purchase some sure track connectors to hold pieces together however won’t help if you have a gap in viaduct or bridge pieces; 2) falls off track when going over short curve pieces - can be frustrating but that’s what the “train’s engineer” is there for. These cons, however, don’t make me deduct a star because my child still gets that much enjoyment from it. As a new mom to this world of trains and after reading countless reviews and blogs of tracks and engines and having some great and not so great purchases, here are my recommendations. - I don’t recommend the Brio RC Train Engine be the first train a child gets when they get into trains on wooden tracks - this r/c train is like the 3rd step or phase after the child “masters” or gets bored with their wooden tracks. I’ve had great luck with my kiddo and maintaining his interest by adding pieces in phases when his interest starts dwindling. “Phase 1” simple track layout and train cars my child pushes (this let my child experiment without too many choices and learn at own pace). “Phase 2” adding a battery-powered engine that only goes back and forth by clicking button on train (no remote control, some of these battery-powered trains have a “free play” option to also make them like a train your child has to push) and adding more curves and switches as options to the wooden tracks. “Phase 3” this r/c train and elevations in your wooden tracks. Please let me know if this was helpful. Thank you!

Nice Train for Wooden Range
This train is high quality and runs well with multiple cars in tow. Although, at top speed it is slower than some other brands. IR controller can be slightly aggravating with line of sight at first but you get used to it.

High Quality
My daughter loves this train! Works great and batteries last a long time. Just make sure the remote and train are on the same signal (A to A or B to B)

Very poor quality, sort reviews by "latest first"
All these points below are mentioned by other reviews, please look at all the recent reviews vs the old ones, don't let the rating fool you, that's all based on old reviews!! It's not RC but infrared, that means you have to point the remote to the train. That in itself isn't the problem, my TV's remote works fine but this Infrared Remote is like the tv remotes from the 1980s you have to point directly, from a maximum of about 6 inches, and even then the remote fails (very) frequently. I promise you your toddler will be super frustrated with it and ditch it and just push the buttons on the train vs. using the remote. Making the "RC" part of this toy useless so you're honestly better off just buying a non RC train that your toddler can push the buttons on and save them the frustration and yourself a lot of money. The engine is not strong enough to pull more than 1 cart up a simple (official BRIO) tunnel without stalling. The design of the train prevents it from having enough traction to reverse over a BRIO tunnel (with no cars attached) the wheels will spin while the train will stay in it's place, stalled on the incline, until it decides to derail itself. The magnet is attached so loosly that it drags on the tracks behind the train, making the reverse function useless without any carts attached because the magnet will snag the rails at connections (keep in mind that the train doesn't have enough power for cars so you're going to be riding it without cars attached, thus a dragging magnet) The magnet isn't strong enough to keep more than 1 cart connected, frequently decoupling mid-ride. Now going back to my first point, if the train is more than 6 inches away when that happens your kid will have to go over and push the button to stop the train by hand and strart it by pushing the button on the train. If you are so lucky to have it decouple within reach of the remote, AND it so graces you with actually responding and stopping and reversing to couple your car(s) again we're back to my last point, where the magnet drags and snags the rails when reversing, so there you are again, manually picking up the train and pushing the buttons. Lastly (I know, how much can there be wrong with a small toy!) It derails by itself for absolutely no apparent reason other than that the wheels run out of the tracks at connections and corners. They are super loose and wobbly (poor quality). Now the good part, the train looks cool and if the remote works it's fun to sound the horn and toggle the lights.

Cool in theory, but poorly executed
I expect better from Brio. As others mentioned, and I wish I’d taken the time to read, this is not RC, it’s IR. The IR sensor on the train is poorly positioned and insensitive, so the remote needs to be pointed just right and within a couple of feet. It also just stops responding to the remote at all unless the train is started by pressing one of the buttons. That’s a lot to ask of a 3 year old. They also do not provide any of the 4(!) AA batteries you need to operate the train, which is crazy considering how expensive this is. It also keeps derailing or getting stuck at imperfect track connections thanks to the dangling magnet that drags along the track, and the motor is so weak it can’t reverse up an incline by itself, and can’t tow more than a couple of cars. The idea and sounds are neat, but execution is terrible. I would never ever buy this for $60, and it’s not even worth the $32 I got it on sale for. Maybe if it were half that I’d be somewhat happy, but as it is I’m just disappointed and probably won’t bother shelling out for name brand Brio anymore.

Super fun and great quality after we recieced a working replacement
Update: we recieved excellent customer service and we’re sent a replacement that worked perfectly! It works nicely with our brio, imaginarium and Thomas trains and my kids have had hours of fun with it. Original: When the package arrived the remote didn’t seem secure but the packaging was attached. After setting it up for my son the train works but the remote control does not. So disappointed to have received a faulty product.

Impressive Remote Control Train
My 4 years old son was very excited with his new toy, The head light and red reverse light shine in the dark, remote control is easy to use, my son figured out the control in less than 5 min

A Terrific Little Train - But don't believe what Rufus tells you!
Before ordering this toy train for my grandson, I checked what batteries were needed. Rufus, Amazon's AI assistant, told me that the train itself needed two LR44 button cells alongside four AA batteries for the remote. Speaking as a retired electronics engineer, I felt sure that this was wrong: why would you need so much power for the infra-red remote, and so little power for the train? Turns out that he (or possibly she?) was indeed speaking with a forked tongue. This toy train does not need *ANY* LR44 cells at all. It simply takes two AA batteries for the train and another two for the remote. In the same way, Rufus insists that you turn the train upside down and remove the *bottom* cover to replace the fictitious LR44 cells. There is no bottom cover. Instead, you undo a single screw at the *back* of the train and replace the two AA batteries as and when needed. Rufus was obviously smoking something illegal when he/she came up with these instructions... 🤣 Aside from the miselading comments from Reckless Rufus, the train is a delight to use. It's so nice to be able to operate it without physiically touching the locomotive, and children will also love being able to operate the horn and lights from the remote. Can't wait to show it to my grandson!
