Can I use this leaf blower without the bag, just to blow the leaves away sometimes?

I've never tried it I cannot think why not. What is the point when you can adjust the lever to blow and it blows leaves away with the bag attached

Can this be used to pick up pine thorns from decking and grsss areas?

The leaf blower works best when what you are picking up is dry. If the grass is wet or damp I would suspect that the function is imparted. What tends to happen is that the part that macerates the bits gets clogged and after a while the machine does not pick up. So a cautious yes if everything is dry

can this be used to blow the grass on the pavement away after the grass has been cut?

Yes it can be. Just put the lever on blow and into a pile or you can put on suck and suck it up.

Want to pick up hedge trimmings/up rooted weeds left on large flat stones (2/3inches long). Will this item pick these up? Leaving heavier stones?

Yes I think it will. I'm very happy with the performance of my leaf blower. It has performed really well and is lighter than previous ones I have owned which I find is important.
