What size is this mattress? I am buying a bed that is 53 X 30.

Is yours a car bed? That's what we have for my daughter, and a year later have yet to find a mattress that fits snugly in the frame! We just tuck a blanket in a side that fills it in and make the bed around it, including putting the fitted sheet and waterproof cover on as though the blanket is apart of the mattress - works terrifically!

Is this mattress covered in plastic or vinyl?

I think it's like fiber glass honestly. I bought this Graco mattress with a crib and washed the outer cover. Put it in the dryer (later realized it said to not dry) by accident and had fiber glass everywhere! I washed it with whites and it ruined everything with it. I thought I could put the clothes back in the washer and get it out. Nope. Had fiber glass all over my washer. My husband is very handy and took everything apart and thoroughly cleaned it. Almost had to buy new washer and dryer.

Does this work on a toddler bed or does it fall through the bars?

It will work on a toddler bed or large cribs. I have the Delta 4-in-1 crib. Even though it fits, the mattress I have did not fully expand on one end so to compromise, we had to stuff blankets and towels to even it out. So if you decide to purchase one, make sure to follow instructions and get it to fully expand. If it doesn't just try to make the best of it, it's worth the price. On another note, a friend of mine also has this, and her's didn't fully expand and she ended up converting it into a kinder mat. Her little one naps on it in the living room.

My daughter gets hot in her sleep. Does this mattress retain any heat? Would this be okay for a "hot sleeper"?

This mattress is perfect and doesn't retain heat. My LO sleeps very well & is normally a hot box. He doesn't sweat at all and is very comfortable.
