Several people commented on the WS 853 having low playback volume. Is the volume low only with speakers, or is it the same with earphones/earbuds?

I would say the small speaker playback volume does not get "loud". I recorded my voice and playback volume sounded the same. The default value is 30 (highest) and sounded comfortable in a quiet room by myself - though turned down to 20 and it still sounds fine. In a noisy area though, you will want to use headphones to carefully review the audio (or hold the speaker up to your ear instead of arms length away). Do not expect to the audio playback to "fill a room".UPDATE: I just noticed the "Diction" recording scene mode is definitely quieter! I was test recording in the various "Scenes" modes, and when I played the "Diction" one back on my computer it was CONSIDERABLY quieter. I would suggest sticking with the "Meeting" mode (the default) or "Off". For diction mode you probably need to speak very closely to the microphone or us an external microphone.NOTE: Set the "Record Level" to "High" as well

Any recommendations for a lav mic short cord no battery required?

Can you transfer audio files from the Recorder to an iPad via bluetooth?

This great little recorder does not have a Bluetooth function.
