The Weather Observer's Handbook provides a comprehensive, practical, and independent guide to all aspects of making weather observations. Automatic weather stations today form the mainstay of both amateur and professional weather observing networks around the world, and yet โ prior to this book โ there existed no independent guide to their selection and use. Traditional and modern weather instruments are covered, including how best to choose and to site a weather station, how to get the best out of your equipment, how to store and analyse your records, and how to share your observations with other people and across the Internet. From amateur observers looking for help in choosing their first weather instruments on a tight budget to professional observers looking for a comprehensive and up-to-date guide covering World Meteorological Organization recommendations on observing methods and practices, all will welcome this handbook. This book is to familiarize the weather observer with the standards and methods of measurement of the primary variables of weather, i.e. Temperature, Humidity, Wind Speed, and Barometric Pressure, and it does it in great detail. It also illustrates the history of the advancement of weather instruments. Review: Great book for serious home weather observers - For those interested in more than just a passing interest in a home weather station, this book is the best that has been published in a long time. Many ideas and details on how to make accurate observations and things to be aware of to obtain readings comparable to professional stations. An excellent book for the serious weather observer.

Excellent Book on Observation and Equipment for Observation, But not Much on Weather Itself
This is a great book if you want to learn how to put together or use a weather station, but if you're wanting to learn about weather itself, go elsewhere. Nothing at all on how weather develops or what the forces are that incfluence weather. Terms not mentioned even once in the book include cloud types, coriolis effect, cyclones, heating, hurricane formation, tornadoes, weather fronts, or weather zones. Not wat I was expecting.

Excellent book with something for all levels of experience
I purchased an automatic weather station in 2006, but it wasn't until I read this book that I finally understood how to site it appropriately, how to calibrate the sensors and how to ensure my data was comparable to that of other local stations. I wish the book had been available prior to buying my weather station as it provides guidance on the type of stations available, their sensors, their suitability to different applications and locations. Having read the book, I have now replaced some of the sensors to improve their accuracy and changed the location of my sensors to follow recommended standards. The book is written in an easy-to-understand style providing practical guidance as well as theory and background for those who are interested. The author has done a great job getting the level of technical detail just right. Whether you're just someone interested in measuring the weather or require weather information in a professional capacity, this book is an invaluable resource and highly recommended.

Very Comprehensive
For the complete novice expecting a book on weather- it is not. It is an excellent book on setting up a weather station either manual or automatic. The book is very comprehensive with summaries at the end. In effect I be using it as my go to reference, so it will not be a book to pass on. All observational parameters are explored and the advantages/ disadvantages in manual/ automatic. As an old school observer I prefer manual instrumentation so as I donโt own a fully automatic station I be reading the detailed chapter on automatic stations. I recommend this book to those serious in building a climatological record in their locality.
